Sintra’s cultural landscape brings together natural and cultural sites within a distinct spatial setting. Other notable themes include Baroque architecture in Mafra, birdwatching along the Tagus, and the Atlantic coast near Cascais. The travel ideas differ clearly: sometimes architecture and history take centre stage; at other times, protected landscapes, wildlife observation, or outdoor trails do.

Sintra: Architecture, History and Landscape

The cultural landscape of Sintra is part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and has been protected by national legislation since 1994. Pena Palace is regarded as a work of pure Romanticism; Egyptian, Moorish, Gothic, and Renaissance elements shape its architecture. A Romantic park was created after Ferdinand II converted a dilapidated monastery into a palace using Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish, and Renaissance elements.

Parque e Palácio de Monserrate is also associated with Romanticism, through Francis Cook and the architect James Knowles Jr. The palace combines Neo-Gothic architecture with extensive elements from Indian architecture. Exotic species from around the world grow in its gardens. At Monserrate, both the design of the building and the botanical diversity of the gardens are in the spotlight.

Castelo dos Mouros is a fortress founded in the 10th century during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Its walls run between granite boulders, rocks, and cliffs across the Serra de Sintra. From the ramparts, you can look out over the village of Sintra, Pena Palace, the green Serra, and the Atlantic. History, rocky landscapes, and views are all integral to the visitor experience here.

Convento dos Capuchos offers a different architectural note. Known for its simplicity, this Franciscan monastery dispenses entirely with luxury and comfort. The forest around the monastery was preserved by the brothers who lived there and is considered one of the remarkable examples of Sintra’s original forest. In Sintra’s cultural landscape, elaborate palace architecture therefore sits alongside a place defined by deliberately chosen simplicity.

There are different ways to visit Parque e Palácio Nacional da Pena: you can explore the monument freely or choose more intimate experiences that delve into its former life. You can reach Pena Palace from Lisbon via the Linha de Sintra; bus No. 434 runs from Sintra station. You can explore Sintra’s cultural routes independently or with a guide, by prior arrangement.

Mafra: Baroque Architecture and Outdoor Trails

The Royal Building of Mafra is one of the most important examples of Italian Baroque architecture outside Italy. Its library preserves a significant collection of works from the 15th to the 19th century. Its architecture and collection of books thus offer two different ways to explore the cultural history of the place.

Mafra’s hunting park, known as Tapada, was established in 1747 and covers around 1,200 hectares. Tapada Nacional de Mafra offers four marked and signposted walking trails that visitors can explore independently. The riverside trail along the Safarujo passes through characteristic wildlife and vegetation, including a variety of bird, amphibian, and reptile species. There are two mountain-biking routes, ranging from 8 to 14 kilometres in length. The designated options range from independent walks and nature observation to cycling routes with specified distances.

Queluz: Royal Garden Culture

Palácio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz reflects Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical styles and is closely associated with the lives of three generations of the Portuguese royal family. The gardens preserve memories of courtly gondola rides, theatre, hunts, musical and literary evenings, masquerade balls, and open-air performances. This variety characterises the gardens’ historic life at court, while the architecture combines several styles.

Wetlands and Birdwatching along the Tagus

The Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo is Portugal’s largest wetland and ranks among Europe’s ten most important wetlands for migratory waterbirds. During migration seasons, the estuary can host more than 120,000 birds. These include pied avocets, more than 20 percent of whose Western European population is found there. The area can be explored on foot, by bicycle, by car, or in traditional boats.

EVOA – Espaço de Visitação e Observação de Aves is dedicated to observing birds in their natural habitat and offers daily guided visits. The site includes 70 hectares of wetlands, three lagoons, five kilometres of footpaths, three observation towers, and photographic hides. A trail through rice fields and pastureland leads through the Lezíria landscape. The combination of guided visits, observation points, and trails makes EVOA a distinct option for nature enthusiasts.

Parque Linear Ribeirinho do Estuário do Tejo has around six kilometres of walking and cycling paths. The park also includes an environmental and landscape interpretation centre, a bird observatory, and areas for outdoor leisure activities. The approximate trail length provides an indication of the distance; the other facilities add opportunities for nature education and observation.

Cascais and Guincho

In the Lisbon region, Cascais combines quiet beaches along the Linha with an Atlantic coastline, dunes, and pine forests. At Guincho, visitors can run, walk, sunbathe, windsurf, and kitesurf. Alongside cultural sites and wetlands, coastal landscapes and activities on the Atlantic are also among the options.
