Vila Franca De Xira between the Tagus, Lezírias and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Vila Franca De Xira
Vila Franca De Xira lies on the Tagus and is surrounded by the fertile Lezírias plains. Nature watching and river experiences sit alongside archaeological sites, churches and museums. You can therefore choose different focuses for your trip: the landscape of the estuary, the region’s history or the town’s cultural heritage.
Tagus landscapes and birdwatching
The Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo covers around 14,415 hectares. Its landscapes include estuarine waters, mouchões, salt pans, agricultural land and cork oak landscapes. The protected area is also an important European site for wintering waterbirds. Its varied landscape features give the estuary a character distinct from that of a single, uniform wetland.
At EVOA, a range of birdwatching options take centre stage. These include four observation towers, two photography hides and other viewing points along a five-kilometre trail. The facilities also include 70 hectares of freshwater wetlands with diverse habitats and water depths, which attract estuarine and breeding birds. More than 200 bird species can be observed there, including migratory birds and breeding birds of the Tagus Estuary; the number of species may vary depending on the survey period.
EVOA’s nocturnal raptor experience offers a different perspective: it includes a two-hour observation tour in an electric vehicle through the Lezíria and is available seasonally. If you plan to take part, bear in mind that it runs only during certain seasons. Access to EVOA is through the Portão do Cardal next to the Ponte Marechal Carmona. Transfers from Vila Franca de Xira or Benavente railway stations may be possible, subject to prior availability checks.
Trails, views and archaeological traces
Monte dos Castelinhos covers an area of more than ten hectares at a natural pass. Via the valley of the Rio Grande da Pipa, this pass connects the banks of the Tagus with the interior of the Lisbon Peninsula. The hill is home to a well-preserved urban complex from the Roman Republican period. Here, the landscape and archaeological history are immediate and distinct aspects of a visit.
The Vila Franca de Xira section of the Rota Histórica das Linhas de Torres includes the themed trail “Defesa do Tejo”. Another viewpoint is Alto do Senhor da Boa Morte, which offers views of the Tagus, the Lezírias and Vila Franca de Xira. The Alto is also home to medieval anthropomorphic tombs and the ruins of the Solar dos Ataíde. The views of the landscape are thus complemented by tangible archaeological and architectural traces.
River culture and cultural heritage
The traditional Tagus boat Barco Varino Liberdade is part of Vila Franca de Xira’s municipal heritage and operates excursions and cruises along routes connected with the river and nature. Built in Abrantes in 1945, it is 18 metres long, has a gross tonnage of 40 tonnes and carries two sails. The leisure harbour of União Desportiva Vilafranquense is another reference point for water-based recreation: its riverside mooring is close to public transport.
Praça de Toiros Palha Blanco was inaugurated on 30 September 1901. It has hosted concerts, carnival parades, balls and film screenings. The Festa do Colete Encarnado also has historical ties to the area’s working and festive culture: it began in July 1932 to honour the campino and those working in agriculture, and to raise money for the local fire brigades.
Several religious buildings preserve art and history from different centuries. Igreja da Misericórdia de Vila Franca de Xira was founded in the 16th century; its important tile ensemble from 1760 depicts the Works of Mercy. Igreja do Mártir Santo São Sebastião was founded in 1576 by King Sebastião because of the plague of 1569, and was converted into a museum department for sacred art in July 2001. Celeiro da Patriarcal dates from the mid-18th century and has been classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” since 2009.
Museums also offer different ways to explore local culture. Casa-Museu Mário Coelho provides insight into the 40-year career of the bullfighter, who was born in Vila Franca de Xira, and displays photographs, trophies and bullfighting costumes. Museu do Neo-Realismo has a documentation centre specialising in neorealism.
Tailor your hotel stay to your travel plans
When choosing a hotel in Vila Franca De Xira, it helps to first map out your planned priorities. Nature watching at EVOA involves seasonal availability and, if needed, a transfer whose availability should be checked in advance; the river harbour is a specific reference point for water-based leisure activities. Museums, churches and archaeological sites offer other themes to consider when planning your trip.
