Sobral De Monte Agraço combines military heritage with church art, hiking trails and a history of wine growing. The town was part of the first line of defence built to protect the Portuguese capital from French occupation. The history of this defence is reflected in a range of sights that can be combined to suit a variety of interests.

Forts and views along the Lines of Torres Vedras

There are eight forts of the Lines of Torres Vedras in the municipality of Sobral De Monte Agraço. Four of them—Alqueidão, Machado, Novo and Simplício—are part of the Alqueidão Visitor Circuit and can be visited. At Forte de Alqueidão, gun emplacements, trenches and ditches are still visible on site. These traces offer a tangible impression of the military installations that form part of the area’s historic character.

From Forte de Alqueidão, the view stretches across the Atlantic coast from the Berlengas to Sintra, as well as over Arrábida, the Tagus, the Ribatejo floodplain and the western landscape. The Alqueidão Circuit also has habitats for birdwatching and a picnic area. Here, military heritage goes hand in hand with scenery and nature observation.

Hiking trail or historical route?

The PR 1 “Rota dos Moinhos do Sobral” is a short, signposted hiking trail that you can walk in either direction. The Rota Histórica das Linhas de Torres is based in Sobral De Monte Agraço and passes military, religious, natural, archaeological and cultural sights. It can be explored by car or on short sections on foot or by bicycle. This gives you a choice between a short hiking trail and a route with a broad historical and cultural focus when planning your trip.

Churches and chapels

The walls of the nave at Igreja de São Quintino feature figurative tile panels. They depict Saint Quintin, the Annunciation and the Visitation. These motifs give the interior art a clear religious focus.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Vida has a façade with two towers. Inside, a tall, well-lit nave and a monumental triumphal arch define the architecture. The church was rebuilt over an earlier chapel and replaced the old parish church of the former settlement. At Capela de São Salvador, the Romanesque window openings stand out, some of which are partially bricked up; the side door is distinctly Gothic, with a pointed archivolt and small capitals.

The history of wine growing and September festivities

Núcleo Museológico do Vinho is housed in an old wine press. Its rooms and exhibits document wine growing and wine production, which used to be among the municipality’s most important economic activities. The history of wine growing thus complements the military and religious themes with an insight into the activity’s former economic importance.

Núcleo Museológico do Vinho lists its opening hours as Tuesday to Saturday, 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm, provided exhibitions are being held at Galeria Municipal. Check whether this condition is met before your visit. Every September, Sobral De Monte Agraço hosts summer festivities and a fair. The programme includes art, music, culture, sport, comedy and bullfighting; dates and the programme vary each year. Plan your visit according to the dates of that year’s events.

Windmill above the town

Moinho de Vento de Sobral De Monte Agraço is located above the town. From there, the view takes in Serra do Socorro, Forte de Alqueidão and the protected area of Serra de Montejunto. The viewpoint adds another perspective on the landscape to visits to the forts and churches.

When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which themes you would like to shape your stay: the forts, church art, the signposted hiking trail or the history of wine growing.
