On the shores of Óbidos Lagoon, a lagoon landscape meets the Atlantic coast. The lagoon covers almost seven square kilometres and extends into the municipalities of Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha. It is also an interesting place for birdwatching: you can spot flamingos and turnstones here, among other birds.

Lagoon, beach and geological traces

The two beach areas offer different conditions. On the lagoon side, the water is calm and suitable for children. The beach facing the open sea offers surfing conditions and has Blue Flag status. Foz do Arelho therefore has two distinct beach characters: calm lagoon waters and a coast facing the Atlantic.

Another glimpse into natural history awaits at Penedo Furado. This Jurassic natural monument was shaped by water and wind over millions of years. The Passadiços da Foz do Arelho, in turn, protect the cliff and dune ecosystems. They allow visitors to take in the landscape without damaging it or compromising their safety.

Exploring on foot and by bike

The approximately 800-metre-long boardwalks include seven viewpoints overlooking the coast and the Berlengas archipelago. They combine a short walk with several perspectives on the landscape. For a longer hike, the INATEL walking trail runs from Óbidos Lagoon to Foz do Arelho beach. It passes through farmland and woodland, crosses the village and reaches the Atlantic coast. As the route description is older, check the route locally before setting out.

The cycle paths also differ in their routes. Between the Zona Industrial and Foz do Arelho, an approximately 5.5-kilometre path runs through a woodland area, separated from car traffic. The path between Nadadouro and Foz do Arelho follows the lagoon and is separated from road traffic. The route towards Salir do Porto is approximately 8.2 kilometres long and follows the Estrada Atlântica. The connection from the Zona Industrial is therefore shorter than the route to Salir do Porto.

Local history and cultural sites

The Casa-Museu Dr. Jaime Umbelino offers a glimpse into the ways of life and customs of the people of Foz do Arelho. It is housed in the former Casa do Arco, where the writer, linguist, lecturer and chronicler Jaime Jorge Umbelino (1916–2007) was born. The house’s programme includes artist residencies, themed exhibitions, discussion groups and cultural initiatives. You can arrange visits through the Junta de Freguesia de Foz do Arelho; check the contact details before your visit.

The Quinta de N. Sra. de Guadalupe also tells the story of local architecture: the quinta dates from the 16th century and includes a chapel built in 1580. The chapel houses a stone bearing the Medeiros coat of arms and a 16th-century polychrome wooden sculpture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Casa das Conchas offers a very different kind of collection: this malacological exhibition space displays more than 10,000 shells.

Óbidos Lagoon is also connected with local traditions. CILO describes it as an area of traditional bateiras and eirós, with fishermen’s cabins and gatherings featuring concertina music. Its educational activities, citizen science, practical experimentation and organised nature tourism invite visitors to discover the landscape, local communities and traditional activities. Another historical episode belongs to the coast: in 1892, the English steamer Roumania, travelling from Liverpool to Bombay, sank off Foz do Arelho beach.

Practical information

A public bus connects the bus station with Foz do Arelho beach. Check the services before travelling. For route planning, the Lagoa de Óbidos app offers free content in Portuguese and English. During the bathing season, amphibious beach chairs are available at the beaches of Foz do Arelho; check the specific operating details in advance.

The beach library next to Avenida do Mar offers books, magazines and free Wi-Fi. As seasonal service details may change, it is a good idea to check them before visiting.
