São Mamede can be explored through a range of interests: landscape and sensory experiences at Pia do Urso, caves on the road to Fátima, local architectural styles and recurring festivals. When looking for a hotel, consider whether nature, local history, architecture or a specific event date will be your main focus.

Nature and Landscape

In Aldeia da Pia do Urso, a striking natural landscape meets restored traditional houses made of stone and wood. The Ecoparque Sensorial in Pia do Urso was Portugal’s first sensory park designed for people with visual impairments. Along a sensory trail, interactive and playful stops invite visitors to experience the flora, fauna and geological formations known as “pias”.

At Vale de Barreiras, next to the settlement of Vale Barreiros, there is a sinkhole considered particularly interesting for its features and natural surroundings. It offers a different experience from the Ecoparque Sensorial: there, stops draw attention to different aspects of nature, while here the landform itself and its surroundings shape the landscape.

Caves and Historical Connections

The Grutas da Moeda lie east of the settlement of São Mamede, on the road to Fátima. They were discovered in 1971 and opened to the public in 1974.

Pia do Urso also has historical connections spanning different periods. As far back as Roman times, it served as a crossing point. In 1385, Pia do Urso was a crossing point for the troops commanded by D. Nuno Álvares Pereira as they travelled from Ourém to Porto de Mós and on to Aljubarrota. A connection to Roman times and a specific, dated medieval episode thus sit side by side.

Architectural Heritage and Local Events

Chaminés Mouriscas feature on some houses in São Mamede and are especially common in the settlement of Moita do Martinho. The Igreja Paroquial de São Mamede stands above São Mamede’s market square; access is via a long staircase at the front. The lintel of the Capela de Santo António bears the year 1780, which is likely to be the year the chapel was founded.

Casal Vieira holds an annual festival in honour of Saint Anthony around the chapel on a Sunday in August; it includes a Mass and a procession. The Feira de São Mamede follows a different schedule: it takes place beside the São Mamede cemetery on the 4th and 20th of each month. If either date falls on a Sunday, the market is brought forward to the previous day. The Feira combines trade with community exchange and socialising. The two events therefore differ in their timing: a festival Sunday in August versus monthly market days. Check the dates of the events before your trip.

Finding Your Way Along the Rota dos Moinhos

The Rota dos Moinhos once began and ended beside the former school in Crespos, São Mamede.
