Leiria offers a range of themes for a trip focused on culture and nature. If you’re looking for a hotel in Leiria, it helps to decide first whether architectural history, museums, music or trails through the landscape will shape your stay. Buildings, collections and trails each offer a distinct focus that you can weigh according to your interests.

Architectural history in Leiria

Construction of the Sé Catedral de Leiria began in 1546; the church was consecrated in 1574. Its freestanding bell tower was built in 1772 over the former medieval Portas do Sol tower. The church’s consecration and the later construction of the bell tower were therefore two separate stages in its history.

The Igreja da Misericórdia was built in 1544 over the former synagogue of Leiria’s Jewish community. Within its walls, Castelo de Leiria preserves traces of different periods of settlement and use, from a military fortress to a royal palace. These buildings thus highlight different aspects of the city’s history.

Museu de Leiria is housed in the former Convento de Santo Agostinho. The church was built from 1577, and the convent complex from 1579. Today, the museum preserves the city’s art collections and an archaeological collection. Its former convent setting and its collections offer two distinct ways to explore the site: through its architectural history and through its art and archaeological holdings.

Museums and their themes

The m|i|mo museum is dedicated to the technical and artistic history of pre-cinema, photography and film. At the Oficina do Olhar, visitors can find and handle reproductions of objects from early experiments with moving images. This activity complements the exploration of media history with a hands-on approach.

Moinho do Papel preserves and presents traditional industrial technologies for making paper and milling grain. Agromuseu Municipal D. Julinha focuses on rural heritage relating to winegrowing, grain, olive oil, livestock and forestry. Its offerings include an educational garden and farm animals associated with agricultural work, food or leisure. By comparison, Moinho focuses on production methods, while Agromuseu covers different areas of rural heritage.

CDIL – Centro de Diálogo Intercultural de Leiria explores the historical presence of Christianity, Judaism and Islam in Leiria. This gives it a different focus from the museums devoted to media history, traditional technologies and agriculture.

Music, events and an annual feast day

On 30 October 2020, UNESCO designated Leiria a Creative City of Music. The Roteiro Musical de Leiria connects eleven urban spaces and institutions through music and creativity. QR codes provide free access to online platforms featuring works by musicians from the municipality. If you’d like to use the digital offerings, check in advance whether the QR-code access is available during your visit.

Centro Cultural Mercado de Sant'Ana has an exhibition space, two auditoriums and open-air galleries for events. The Prove Leiria Doçaria fair is also among the events held at Mercado de Sant'Ana; check the current dates when planning your visit. Teatro Miguel Franco is a venue for festivals, particularly film festivals.

A fixed date in the annual calendar is the feast of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, Leiria’s patron saint: it takes place every year on 15 August. If you’d like to plan your stay around it, you can take this date into account when organizing your trip.

Landscape and trails

The Abrigo do Lagar Velho archaeological site is located in Vale do Lapedo. A child burial dating from the Upper Paleolithic was found there and is known as Menino do Lapedo. It is considered the only known human burial from this period on the Iberian Peninsula. The valley has geological, morphological, archaeological, cultural, scenic, ecosystem and biological value.

The PR4 Rota da Nascente do Rio Lis runs through a valley between Serra da Maunça and Serra da Senhora do Monte. The route follows trails through scrubland and forest. From the highest point, there are views of the city of Leiria and, in good visibility, the Berlengas Islands. The qualification “in good visibility” is important for the view of the islands.

Percurso Polis follows the Rio Lis and offers opportunities to experience the river landscape and take part in sports. Its stated focus differs from that of the PR4: here, the river and leisure activities take center stage, while the PR4 follows a valley trail through scrubland and forest. You can compare the two trails by their landscapes and the activities mentioned.
