Alvaiázere: Hiking, Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Alvaiázere
Alvaiázere brings together archaeological sites, routes and varied landscapes. In the Ramalhal area, a megalithic complex includes monuments that are around 5,000 years old. Each hiking trail has its own focus: some follow a river, pass through olive groves or lead to a historically significant destination. The museum and regional cuisine also offer insights into the history and daily life of the municipality.
Landscapes and Trails
Well-watered floodplains and towering limestone formations shape Alvaiázere’s varied landscape. Plants found there include pines, Portuguese oaks, holm oaks, cork oaks, centuries-old olive trees and wild orchids. The Serra de Alvaiázere is the highest point of the Sicó Massif; it is also home to a Bronze Age settlement. Fórnea do Bofinho is a depression typical of karst areas, with a well-maintained olive grove.
Parque Botânico da Mata do Carrascal is a protected area covering 14.73 hectares. For a different perspective on the landscape, the PR 5 AVZ – Percurso da Ribeira do Tordo follows the Ribeira do Tordo, passes the ruins of watermills and reaches the Olho do Tordo spring. The PR 7 AVZ – Rota Dona Maria follows the right bank of the Ribeira de Foz de Alge as far as the area around Ribeira de Foz de Alge river beach.
Circular Walks and Long-Distance Routes
The PR 1 AVZ – Por trilhos de Al-Baizir is a 9.3-kilometre circular trail that takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Its route passes through oak forests and olive groves, as well as stands of aromatic plants and areas with wild orchids. The PR 6 AVZ – Percurso Pedestre do Ramalhal differs in its start and end point: the circular route begins and ends in the village of Ramalhal.
The route to the megalithic complex also has a historical connection: the GR 35 AVZ – Grande Rota de Alvaiázere follows an old Roman road to reach it. The Rota Carmelita, in turn, passes through Alvaiázere and forms part of a 111-kilometre route from the Carmelo de Santa Teresa in Coimbra to the Santuário de Fátima. The PR 8 AVZ – Rota dos Cântaros e das Rodilhas links two more routes: it crosses the Caminho de Santiago and passes through the Sicó-Alvaiázere Site of Community Importance.
Archaeology, History and the Museum
The archaeological evidence spans the Bronze Age through to the Roman period: Rominha is home to a Roman villa, while the Serra de Alvaiázere has a Bronze Age settlement. The Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Covões dates from the 18th century. Together, these sites offer an overview of several periods, although they are not all the same type of archaeological evidence.
The Museu Municipal de Alvaiázere presents two exhibitions with different focuses. “Tempo, Espaço e Memória” explores traditional occupations that shaped the municipality of Alvaiázere up to the mid-20th century. “Conduzidos pelo Tempo” covers the municipality’s archaeology and the settlement of the area from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. The themes complement each other: one exhibition focuses on occupations and more recent history, while the other covers a long archaeological period.
The museum is open Monday to Saturday. In winter, it is open from 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday; in summer, from 10:00 to 18:00. On Saturdays, it is open from 11:00 to 17:00 year-round; it is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Check the opening times before your visit.
Chícharos and Farinheira de Chícharo
In Alvaiázere, chícharos are prepared as a purée or served as a side dish with meat, sausages and fish, including fried sardines and cod. To make Farinheira de Chícharo, hot water and chícharo flour are added after three days of curing; the sausage is then stuffed and smoked. If you would like to try it, ask what is currently available.
Alvaiázere in the Terras de Sicó
Alvaiázere is part of the Terras de Sicó. This region is shaped by its geological, archaeological, architectural and ethnographic heritage. Alvaiázere therefore offers several specific points of interest for planning your trip: its landscape and trails, archaeological sites from different periods, museum exhibits and dishes made with chícharos.
