Salir – Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Salir
In Salir, you can plan your trip around nature, outdoor activities and history. The themes range from the protected landscape of Rocha da Pena to hiking trails and routes through the Algarve hinterland, as well as the archaeological traces of Castelo de Salir. Consider whether you would like to spend most of your time outdoors, learn more about the settlement’s history, or include both in your stay.
Landscape and outdoor activities
The protected landscape of Rocha da Pena lies in the parishes of Salir and Benafim, covers 637 hectares and reaches a maximum elevation of 479 metres. It is a prominent natural landmark for a stay in Salir. The area is also part of the Algarvensis Geopark.
Hiking trails and paths run throughout the parish of Salir. The walking routes include picnic areas and springs where visitors can stop and enjoy a picnic. If you enjoy walking, you can factor in a rest at these spots when planning your route. Viewpoints on the hills of Salir offer views of characteristic landscapes, adding a distinct highlight alongside walks through the parish.
Paragliding is another possible activity: the parish of Salir offers excellent conditions for it. This is a different focus from a walking tour. The activity you choose to plan therefore depends on the kind of exploration you are looking for.
Routes through the Algarve hinterland
Salir is part of routes through the Algarve’s interior that follow the Via Algarviana on foot or by bicycle. The area is also part of routes along the EN124. This road connects the Algarve mountains between Portimão and Alcoutim. These refer to different ways of planning a trip: the Via Algarviana is for hiking or cycling, while the EN124 is a road connection through the mountains. If you plan to use either route, check current route and road conditions in advance.
Archaeology and history of Salir
Castelo de Salir was part of the Algarve’s Almohad defence system. Archaeological excavations there uncovered residential structures arranged around courtyards, as well as alcoves, kitchens, an oven and channels. The finds connect the castle’s defensive history with details about its living spaces and their layout.
At the Pólo Museológico de Salir, a walkway offers a view of excavated remains in the outdoor area. The museum also explains how the inhabitants of Salir defended their settlement and lived there in the 12th and 13th centuries. This links the archaeological perspective on specific residential structures with an account of life at the time. If you would like to explore Salir’s history, the castle and museum offer different points of focus: the Almohad defence system and life in the settlement.
A festival day as a reason to visit
The Festa da Espiga is celebrated on Ascension Day. If the festival is a factor in your trip, include Ascension Day in your plans and check the dates of the celebrations that year. Alongside nature and history, this adds a specific festival day as a possible focus for your stay.
