Benafim: Walking Trails, Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Benafim
Benafim brings together nature and culture, which you can prioritize differently depending on the focus of your trip. The protected landscape of Fonte da Benémola, a signposted circular trail along the stream, and local and festive traditions offer different points of interest. There is also the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Glória and Benafim Pequeno, designated as a traditional architectural ensemble. You can start planning your stay by deciding whether landscape, walking, architectural heritage or local traditions should take center stage.
Landscape and walking
The protected landscape of Fonte da Benémola extends across Querença, Tôr and Benafim in the municipality of Loulé and covers 392 ha. At Fonte da Benémola, there is a signposted, 4.5 km circular walking trail along the stream. The area figure describes the landscape, while the distance refers to the trail: two figures that answer different planning questions and make the nature and walking aspects tangible.
Another walking route is the PR18 LLE Rocha da Pena trail. It runs through an area of about 672 ha in the Freguesia de Salir and the União de Freguesias de Querença, Tôr e Benafim in the Concelho de Loulé. This helps distinguish between different geographical perspectives: for the circular trail at Fonte da Benémola, the route length and streamside location are specified; for PR18, the area and its administrative units are given. The approximately 672 ha refers to the area through which PR18 runs, not the length of the circular trail at Fonte da Benémola.
Culture and townscape
Benafim Pequeno is designated as a traditional architectural ensemble. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da GlĂłria is located in Benafim. Together, these points of interest connect the cultural theme to both the townscape and the church. If you are more interested in architectural heritage than walking, you can consider these as separate points of reference for your stay.
Festivals and seasonal references
The festival in honor of Nossa Senhora da Glória, Benafim’s patron saint, takes place on the third Saturday in October. The Festa dos Milhos is associated with the month of August in Benafim and the local culinary use of corn. For seasonal planning, these offer two distinct reference points: a specific Saturday in October and the August association with the corn tradition.
Crafts and regenerative agriculture
The crafts associated with Benafim mainly include handmade lacework, embroidery and patchwork. An artisan based in Zimbral makes these items. These three forms give the crafts theme specific content and add a distinct cultural perspective to the architectural heritage and festival references.
Regenerative agriculture is also represented as a theme: for 2025–2026, the Geoparque Algarvensis educational program included the activity “A Vida na Quinta do Freixo” at Quinta do Freixo in Benafim. It covered the principles of regenerative agriculture. This adds an agricultural focus alongside the landscape and crafts, clearly placed within the program period.
