Faro can be explored through a wide range of travel interests: coastal landscapes and wildlife sit alongside hiking trails, historic buildings and distinctive place names. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Faro, these themes can help guide your choice of destinations. The following examples show how varied nature and cultural experiences can be across the Algarve.

Wetlands, Cliffs and Wildlife

Parque Natural da Ria Formosa is an internationally important wetland. Canals, islands, salt marshes and sandbanks shape the landscape along 60 kilometres of the Algarve coast. Centro de Educação Ambiental de Marim offers a specific connection to birdwatching: visitors can get information there about suitable trails and viewing spots. The nature park also organises trips in a traditional boat once used for tuna fishing.

Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina offers a different setting and extends as far as Burgau in the Algarve. Its coastal landscape includes dramatic cliffs and distinctive wildlife and plant life. The park is known for white storks that nest on sea cliffs, as well as otters in marine habitats. Praia do Amado is also part of this coastal setting: it is one of the beaches on the Vicentine Coast popular with surfers. Wetlands with canals and salt marshes on the one hand, and a cliff-lined coast and marine habitats on the other—these different landscape themes can shape your travel plans.

Hiking Trails and Exploring the Sapal

The Fishermen’s Trail is a coastal path along the cliffs that can only be travelled on foot. It comprises 13 stages totalling 226.5 kilometres. For planning your hike, both the division into stages and the total distance provide a practical guide. The trail is suited to anyone who wants to make a coastal route on foot the focus of their trip; it does not require a connection to the other natural areas mentioned here.

In the protected wetland of Sapal de Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, you can explore on foot or by boat. In the Sapal, visitors can also follow the paths between the salt pans on foot or by bicycle and observe salt production. This area therefore offers different ways to get around: exploring on foot, cycling or taking in the views from a boat. This differs from the stage hike along the Fishermen’s Trail, which is specifically described as a walking route.

Historic Buildings and Local Character

Castelo e Cerca Urbana de Silves is one of Portugal’s most significant Muslim fortifications and the largest in the Algarve. It has been classified as a national monument since 1910. Its towers and walls provide viewpoints overlooking the orange groves along the Rio Arade. In Faro, Porta Árabe in Arco da Vila recalls another part of the past: it was part of the old Muslim city walls and served as a city entrance for people arriving from the sea.

Sé Catedral de Faro also brings together several historical aspects. It was elevated to cathedral status in the 14th century and expanded during the reign of D. Dinis. Inside is one of the Algarve’s most valuable art collections from the 17th and 18th centuries. If you are comparing cultural sights, Silves offers a fortification with viewpoints, while the Sé in Faro has its own distinct focus: its history as a cathedral and its art collection.

Santa Luzia is recognised as the “Octopus Capital.” The name is a distinct point of reference for travellers who also want to take local character into account when finding their way around. Faro’s international airport is about four kilometres from the city centre. This means you can factor nature, culture and the approximate distance between the airport and city centre into your travel plans.
