Portimão lies in the estuary of the Arade River. From Praia da Rocha and the lagoon landscape to places with a long history, you’ll find a wide range of ideas for planning your trip. The city is also accessible by sea: Portimão has a marina and a cruise port. The experiences you want to focus on can therefore be a good starting point for choosing your hotel.

Beach and maritime history

Praia da Rocha is a sandy beach about 3 kilometres long, shaped by rock formations carved by the sea. The beach has facilities for basketball, football, volleyball and aerobics. As these facilities may change, it’s advisable to check the situation locally. This lets you plan your beach visit around your own interests without reducing the landscape to its bathing facilities.

Portimão’s fishing tradition developed particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries with the rise of the canning industry and tourism. Grilled sardines are especially well known in the city. The connection between fishing and the canning industry can also be seen in the historic landscape along the Arade: the P5 “Caminhos do Tempo” circular route links Portimão and Silves along the river. Its banks were once home to salt pans, tidal mills and canning factories.

Lagoon, coastal cliffs and rural trails

The P1 “A Rocha Delicada” circular route passes through Quinta da Rocha, a peninsula bordered by the Ribeira de Odiáxere and the River Alvor. Along the way, agricultural land alternates with Mediterranean scrubland, marshland, former salt pans and fish farms; the Alvor lagoon ecosystem is also part of this landscape. The lagoon provides a habitat for numerous bird species, including flamingos. Sightings may vary depending on the season.

Other trails reveal different types of landscape. P3 “Varandas sobre o Mar” follows the top of a rocky coastal cliff formed from Miocene limestone. P4 “Viagem Interior” passes through a rural setting with citrus groves, almond orchards and carob trees. The different route descriptions help you choose between the lagoon, coastal geology and agricultural landscapes. You don’t have to use any one landscape as a measure of the entire region.

Cultural history from prehistory to the present

The Museu de Portimão houses the permanent exhibition “Portimão, Território e Identidade”. It presents local history from prehistory to the present day. The museum is housed in a renovated former factory building dating from the late 19th century. Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes is also located in a 19th-century building: Manuel Teixeira Gomes, an important politician and writer, was born there. The Casa can host recitals, presentations and workshops.

In Alcalar, the Monumentos Megalíticos de Alcalar are designated a National Monument. The site also includes a settlement on a strategically located hill suitable for defence, overlooking megalithic tombs. The museum, Casa and archaeological sites offer different ways to explore history: from the broad timespan of a permanent exhibition to a specific archaeological site.

Activities for different kinds of trip

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve complex includes a racetrack, a karting track and an off-road track. As individual facilities may change, it’s best to check in advance what is available for your visit. AlgarExperience offers dolphin watching, brunch on board and parasailing. The company operates from Portimão as well as Albufeira, Vilamoura and Lagos. As its offerings and operating locations may change, check the current programme and departure point in advance.

The municipal “Vai e Vem” bus service connects different parts of Portimão with the beaches. Routes and timetables may change, so check which connection is suitable for your travel dates. That way, you can start with the itinerary that genuinely interests you.
