If you are looking for a hotel in Alandroal, you can shape your stay around the subjects that interest you. The castle and churches offer a focus on architectural and cultural history; the PR 1 Rota do Giro, a cultural forum and a river beach within the municipality complete the picture. Before booking, you can consider whether you would like to focus mainly on architectural history, types of events or the landscape.

Castle and Architectural History

According to inscriptions, construction work on Castelo de Alandroal began in February 1294 and was completed exactly four years later, in February 1298. The complex is divided into a keep and an Alcáçova. Its towers include two beside the Porta Legal and another beside the Porta do Arrabalde; the Torre de Menagem and Torre dos Paços are also part of the complex. These features provide a specific framework for understanding the castle in terms of both its construction period and its architectural layout.

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição is also located within the castle; it is attached to the Torre de Menagem. The connection between the castle structure and the religious building offers an additional cultural-historical perspective on the same place.

Churches, Chapels and Monument

The Igreja da Misericórdia consists of two adjoining churches. The older dates from the 16th century, and the newer from the late 17th or early 18th century. Inside are a gilded carved altarpiece, two altars, an upper choir gallery and a marble pulpit. The dates and furnishings offer different points of reference: the construction periods place the churches in their historical context, while the altarpiece, altars, gallery and pulpit identify specific features of the interior.

The Fonte das Bicas is also among Alandroal’s cultural-historical attractions. It is classified as an MIP – Monumento de Interesse Público, or Monument of Public Interest. The dating of the Ermida de São Sebastião is less precise: it was probably founded by the Senado de Alandroal during the 16th century, but the exact date of its foundation is unknown.

A local legend links the construction of the Ermida de S. Bento to the hermit João Sirgado, who prayed there every day. He was credited with saving the village from the deadly plague of 1580. This tradition gives the chapel its own story, distinct from the architectural details about the castle and churches.

Cultural Programme and Cultural Landscape

The description of the Fórum Cultural Transfronteiriço, updated in 2020, lists an auditorium with 176 seats, a screening room, a café-concert area and exhibition spaces. Performances listed include concerts, plays, ballet and recitals. Check the current programme before travelling if you would like to combine your stay with an event.

The PR 1 Rota do Giro starts at the Ermida de N. Sr.ª da Consolação. Along the route are centuries-old giros, which once carried water from a spring to former gardens and orchards. The route can therefore also be viewed in terms of historical water supply and garden use. If you plan to take the tour, check with the municipality for current trail conditions.
