Borba brings together castle and church history, visible marblework and wine traditions. Sections of the castle walls, the gates of Celeiro and de Estremoz, and the massive keep shape the townscape. Marble appears in door and window surrounds, decorated chimneys, street signs and monuments. Other highlights include churches with a range of artworks, an interpretation centre dedicated to the Portuguese Restoration of Independence, and wine tastings. If you are considering Borba as a destination, these themes can help you plan your stay around your interests.

Castle Walls, Exhibition and the Way of St James

The Adarve da Muralha do Castelo is a footpath along the castle wall between the gate of Estremoz and the clock tower. The route includes the permanent exhibition “Borba: do povoado medieval à cidade de Hoje”. This walk therefore brings together the visible castle remains and an exhibition about Borba’s history. The original Church of Santa Maria was founded inside the castle in 1260 and granted by King D. Afonso III to the Military Order of Avis.

Borba is also a stopping point on a 70-kilometre cross-border route of the Way of St James in the Alentejo. The route connects Badajoz with the Caminho Nascente in Estremoz and ends in Borba. The 70-kilometre figure refers to the total length of the route, not the length of an individual stage to Borba.

Church Art and Marble in the Townscape

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Soveral ou Matriz has ten chapels featuring artistic contributions from the 17th and 18th centuries. In the Igreja de São Bartolomeu, a painted ceiling depicts scenes from the life of Saint Bartholomew; it is dated to around 1630. The Igreja de Santo António houses a marble altarpiece by José Francisco de Abreu, dating to around 1750. On the main façade of the Senhor Jesus dos Aflitos chapel, white and black marble form a chequerboard pattern. These examples offer different points of interest: chapels and painting sit alongside a marble altarpiece and a geometrically designed façade.

History and Practical Visit Planning

The Centro de Interpretação da Guerra da Restauração presents the history of the Portuguese Restoration of Independence from 1580 to 1668. It also covers the Battle of Montes Claros, fought in the territory of Borba. The centre is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you are planning a visit, check the opening hours in advance.

Wine Tastings and Regional Traditions

Adega de Borba offers wine tastings and other wine-related activities by prior appointment. Arrange your appointment before travelling. The Festa da Vinha e do Vinho brings wine and viticulture together with Alentejo and Borba gastronomy. Tastings showcase regional products such as cheese, cured meats, olive oil and bread. Vinho de Talha is also available to taste: this wine is made in Borba using traditional methods and has a history spanning more than two thousand years. If you are considering visiting the festival on a specific date, check the details for the year you wish to go.

The themes are easy to distinguish: the castle walls and churches lead to Borba’s architectural and artistic history, the interpretation centre to Portuguese history, and the wine offerings to local traditions. When choosing a destination, consider which of these highlights matters most to your stay.
