The castle and its architectural history
The architectural ensemble of Castelo de Viana do Alentejo is classified as a National Monument. It includes the walled complex, Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Anunciação, Igreja da Misericórdia de Viana do Alentejo, Capela de Santo António and the former Capela de Nossa Senhora da Assunção. The latter now serves as an interpretation centre for the ensemble.
The castle consists of five sections of wall, with their corners topped by cylindrical towers with roof structures. Igreja Matriz stands within the complex: built around 1521 in the Manueline style, it is attributed to Diogo de Arruda. The approximate date and attribution provide two specific points of reference for placing the church in the town’s architectural history.
Fountains, crafts and local history
The town’s former uses also come into focus at its fountains and water points. Chafariz da Praça da Palha was built in 1904 and served as a municipal washhouse during the first decades of the 20th century. Fonte de Baixo, also known as Fonte das Freiras, was used by the Hieronymite nuns of Convento do Bom Jesus.
Fonte da Renascença is also known as Fonte dos Escudeiros or Fonte da Praça; it may be the same as the medieval Fonte Grande. Fonte da Cruz is thought to have been the first connection to a public water supply in Viana do Alentejo. It was created in 1898 through a public collection. Together, these examples illustrate different aspects of local history: community funding, earlier water supply and the Hieronymite nuns’ use of a spring.
Pottery is also among the traditions passed down here. The Médico de Sousa pottery school in Viana do Alentejo made pottery knowledge and training available to anyone who wanted to learn. Since 2013, Igreja da Misericórdia de Viana do Alentejo has hosted a series of temporary exhibitions.
Exhibitions and collections
Casa dos Milagres at Santuário de Nossa Senhora D’Aires houses a collection of folk and religious art that is open to visitors. The items on display include old photographs, wedding dresses, hair braids and early votive offerings. The range of objects gives the collection a tangible connection to religious art and personal mementos.
The first exhibition at Núcleo Museológico focuses on the archaeological heritage identified and collected to date throughout the Município de Viana do Alentejo. It presents the history of settlement and land use in the area that is now part of the municipality over the last five to six millennia. The permanent exhibition “Memórias Daqui e D´Além” is on the first floor of Viana do Alentejo’s former library building; it opened on 22 September 2022. Municipal information dated 15 May 2023 lists visiting hours as Tuesday to Saturday, 09:30–13:00 and 14:00–17:30. Check the hours before your visit.
Feira D’Aires and routes
Feira D’Aires takes place in Viana do Alentejo around the sanctuary of the same name. It begins on the fourth Sunday in September and lasts four days. The festival has a religious character and attracts thousands of worshippers. The programme also includes a Levante market, a showcase of economic activities and traditional trade, and music. The musical performances culminate on the main stage.
Romaria a Cavalo is another occasion around which to plan your visit. The procession travels between Moita and Viana do Alentejo along the former royal livestock trail and usually takes place on the last weekend of April. For those interested in routes, the Caminho Nascente also passes through the Freguesia Viana do Alentejo; Santuário de Nossa Senhora D’Aires is a mandatory stop along the way.
