Torre de Moncorvo combines a historic centre with regional almond traditions and the landscapes of Lagos do Sabor. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can first consider whether architectural history, seasonal blossoms, regional produce or activities on the water will be your main focus. These different themes can help you shape your trip around your own interests.

Historic centre and buildings

The Rota do Património Histórico begins at the Loja Interativa de Turismo and passes through the historic centre of Torre de Moncorvo. It is 1.6 kilometres long, takes about an hour on foot and is rated as easy. This gives you both an approximate duration and the route length for planning; local conditions may change.

Among the notable buildings is the Igreja Matriz de Torre de Moncorvo, which is classified as a National Monument. Its tower and Renaissance portal define its exterior appearance. Inside, the church follows the hall church layout: the five bays of the nave are vaulted at the same height. The Igreja da Misericórdia de Moncorvo offers a different combination of stylistic elements, with its Renaissance façade and the Baroque, gilded high altar in the main chapel.

Smaller historic details also give the centre its own character. At the Porta da Traição, you can see battlements and part of the castle wall’s rampart walk. The Casa da Roda dos Expostos bears the date 1785 and preserves the former foundling wheel, where abandoned infants could be left anonymously.

For museum visits, there are several different themes to explore: the Museu do Castelo displays archaeological ceramics, faience, metals, coins, glass and animal bones, as well as a model of the castle. The Museu de Arte Sacra is housed in the Igreja da Misericórdia. Its religious art comes from the Igreja Matriz and the Igreja da Misericórdia and includes works from the 16th to the 20th century. The Museu do Ferro preserves the history of the mining industry developed in the 19th century near one of the country’s largest iron ore deposits.

Almond traditions and landscapes

Amêndoa Coberta de Moncorvo is a regional confection made from peeled, roasted sweet almonds coated in sugar paste. It is available in the classic, or white, variety; brown, or chocolate-coated; and as “peladinhas”. In its production, specialist makers known as “cobrideiras” coat the almonds repeatedly with sugar syrup. This product brings together distinct varieties and a traditional method of production.

The Rota das Amendoeiras passes through almond groves that are covered in white and pink blossoms in February and March; the exact timing may vary slightly. Another landscape to explore is the Perímetro Florestal da Serra do Reboredo, which has the largest oak forest in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes.

Lagos do Sabor and activities on the water

The Lagos do Sabor area includes three lakes: Cilhades, dos Santuários and Medal. The Miradouro da Fraga do Cão offers views over the lakes. For exploring from the water, the area has a river landing: small boats travelling on the Douro can moor there and explore the Sabor Lakes area.

Praia Fluvial da Foz do Sabor has a mooring area and a jetty, supporting facilities, a picnic area and parking. Water sports and leisure activities are also available there. For your specific plans, it may be useful to check the current status of the facilities.

Wine is also part of the region’s cultural offerings: the Festival Vinho Sabor Douro showcases wine production in Torre de Moncorvo and its region. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates, as they may vary.
