The walled town of Ansiães offers a striking glimpse into the history of Carrazeda De Ansiães. It is also home to prehistoric monuments, museums and walking routes that offer different ways to plan your trip: from medieval architecture to rural traditions and the region’s landscape.

Ansiães and its prehistoric heritage

The fortifications of Ansiães have an oval upper section with five square towers. A second wall stretches for more than 600 metres. From the 11th century onwards, Ansiães received successive charters and developed into the centre of a vast medieval territory. Within Ansiães stands the Romanesque Church of São Salvador, which appears to date from the 12th century.

The Anta de Zedes also tells of earlier times: eight supporting stones and a capstone form the polygonal funerary monument. The Fraga pintada do Cachão da Rapa is located on a vertical granite outcrop and has been classified as a National Monument since 1943. Granite shapes the region’s landscape; suggested places to visit also include prehistoric remains such as rock paintings and well-preserved dolmens.

Museums and regional culture

The Centro Interpretativo do Vale do Tua is located in the Foz Tua railway station in Carrazeda de Ansiães. Its exhibition is organised around three main themes: the valley, the Tua railway line and the dam. In the section on the valley, a time capsule takes visitors through several millennia, from the valley’s geological and natural features to its settlement. The exhibition thus presents the landscape alongside human history.

The Museu da Memória Rural preserves and presents the municipality’s tangible and intangible rural heritage. The traditional occupations featured include basket weaving, baking, cheesemaking, shepherding and cooperage. If you are interested in craft and agricultural traditions, this thematic focus offers a different way to explore regional culture than the fortifications and archaeological remains. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting.

Mills, olive oil and local products

In Lavandeira, the Núcleo Museológico do Azeite shows how traditional olive oil was produced in an oil mill with a central screw press. The display focuses on the production process and its technical basis. Check the current access arrangements before your visit.

The restored watermills known as Moinhos de Água do Ribeiro do Coito are located near Vilarinho da Castanheira, in an idyllic rural recreation area. Another mill, the Moinho de Vento de Carrazeda de Ansiães, was built at the beginning of the 20th century and restored in 2012. It was incorporated into an educational, cultural and heritage conservation programme that included guided visits; confirm access in advance. At the Foz Tua Wine House, visitors can taste and buy products from Carrazeda de Ansiães. Check before travelling whether it is currently open.

Walking trails and practical information

For a walk with a specified duration, the PR3 CRZ Trilho de Foz-Tua is a useful option: the easy route is 3.5 kilometres long and takes about 50 minutes to walk. Check conditions before setting out. The PR2 CRZ Trilho Senhor da Boa Morte includes the Olhos do Tua and Senhor da Boa Morte viewpoints. The two routes therefore differ in the features highlighted here: for the PR3, it is the distance and approximate walking time; for the PR2, the two named viewpoints.

Carrazeda de Ansiães can be reached via the IC5 and A4 roads. Check road conditions before travelling. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether walking trails, medieval history, museums or regional products will be your main focus. The different themes can help guide your choice of accommodation without assuming that every traveller will follow the same itinerary.
