You can plan a trip around Macedo de Cavaleiros around a range of different themes: the Caretos tradition in Podence, museums focusing on history and rural life, and trails and water activities at the Azibo Reservoir. The region’s cultural history comes into particularly clear focus when exhibitions highlight specific customs, collections or historical events. To choose your excursions, you can first decide whether you would rather follow a cultural trail or spend time by the water.

Caretos and historical memory

The Casa do Careto in Podence dedicates its permanent exhibition to the village’s carnival tradition and the Caretos. Costumes, cowbells, masks and the Caretos’ complete attire are all part of the exhibition. It thus focuses on both the custom and its associated clothing and accessories. The Winter Festivities – Caretos de Podence are included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Museu Municipal Martim Gonçalves de Macedo commemorates a different historical event: the heroic deed of Martim Gonçalves de Macedo at the Battle of Aljubarrota on 14 August 1385. In Podence, the focus is on a festive tradition and its insignia; at this museum, it is on a named individual and a precisely dated event. This difference offers two distinct ways to explore the region’s cultural history.

Museums with different areas of focus

The Museu de Arte Sacra is housed in Casa FalcĂŁo, an 18th-century manor house in the centre of Macedo de Cavaleiros. Archaeological artefacts are at the heart of the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia Coronel Albino Pereira Lopo: they are displayed in two chronological sections that illustrate more than 5,000 years of history. This chronological arrangement offers a different emphasis from exhibitions about a specific custom or event.

The Museu Rural de Salselas features a permanent exhibition of an extensive collection of objects that testify to the close relationship between people and the land. The Museu Municipal da Ordem dos Templários e da Identidade Nacional focuses on the history of the Knights Templar. If you choose museums based on a particular interest, you can compare a range of topics: archaeological periods, rural life, sacred art, the Knights Templar, or the memory of 1385.

Discover honey and beekeeping

The Museu do Mel e da Apicultura has two sections: the Museu de Antiguidades and the Museu Vivo. At the Museu de Antiguidades, visitors can taste up to five different kinds of honey. At the Museu Vivo, bees can be observed safely, including in a glass-walled beehive.

The two sections offer different ways to explore the subject: one focuses on tasting, the other on observing bees. When planning your trip, this gives you a clear choice between a tasting experience and an insight into beekeeping. The museum’s layout explicitly distinguishes between these two aspects.

Azibo: trails and water activities

The protected area around the Azibo Reservoir has trails for walking and cycling. The reservoir offers water sports such as swimming, rowing and canoeing. You can therefore choose between land-based activities and a range of options on the water. What you include in your plans depends on whether you would rather walk or cycle, or take part in one of the water sports mentioned.

Fraga da Pegada river beach is located within the protected landscape area of the Azibo Reservoir. Its waters are suitable for windsurfing. The activities can therefore be distinguished by location: swimming, rowing and canoeing are associated with the reservoir, while windsurfing is associated with Fraga da Pegada.

A route that starts and ends in the town centre

The Corredor Verde de Vale de Prados Short Route starts and ends in the centre of Macedo de Cavaleiros. This provides a different point of reference from the trails in the protected area: both endpoints are specified for this route, while walking and cycling are among the activities available at Azibo. This lets you choose between a route with a set start and end point and an area offering several outdoor activities.
