Podence is closely associated with the Caretos tradition. Alongside Entrudo Chocalheiro, Casa do Careto, the Museu do Careto, Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação and the Trilho dos Caretos are among the highlights of a stay.

Entrudo Chocalheiro and the Caretos

During the Entrudo Chocalheiro processions, the masked Caretos roam the village of Podence. Their main role in the ritual is to tease women with their cowbells. Both the masked figures’ appearances in the village and the cowbells are therefore central to the custom. Podence’s Entrudo Chocalheiro is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

Children take part too: as “facanitos”, they play the role of Caretos apprentices. You can also see several pieces of graffiti in Podence dedicated to the Caretos de Podence tradition. This means you encounter the tradition in the ritual, in the children’s role and in the village streetscape.

An exhibition and film about the tradition

Casa do Careto has a permanent exhibition of Caretos costumes, cowbells, masks and other clothing. A visit to the Museu do Careto also includes a screening of a documentary about the tradition. At the Casa do Careto shop, you can take part in a “Ser Careto” experience. The exhibition and film focus on different aspects: the permanent exhibition displays the attire, while the film explores the tradition.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação in Podence was built in the final years of the 17th century and is classified as a monument of public interest. The exact date of its foundation, and whether it replaced an older building, are unknown. The church adds a distinct historical dimension alongside the lively Caretos custom.

Trilho dos Caretos and Praia da Ribeira

The short “Trilho dos Caretos” route starts at an information board in the village of Podence, near Casa do Careto, and ends at Praia da Ribeira. This beach is one of the two river beaches at the Azibo Reservoir. The route therefore has clearly distinct starting and finishing points.

The circular version of the Trilho dos Caretos de Podence is about 8.5 km long and has a low difficulty level. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. The approximate length and low difficulty provide guidance for planning; Praia da Ribeira, by contrast, is the stated end point of the short route.

Transmontana cuisine

The regional tavern “O Careto” is located in Casa do Careto. It serves Transmontana dishes, including Posta, Rodeão and various cured meats. As service details can change, it is best to ask about the current offering before your visit. This lets you plan your visit around the dishes currently being served.
