Vila Verde: Churches, Festivals and Crafts
Accommodation in Vila Verde
Churches and Local History
Vila Verde brings together architectural history, festival traditions and textile crafts. Several historical points of reference can help you find your bearings. The Igreja de SĂŁo Paio de Vila Verde was built in the 16th century in place of an earlier Romanesque church. The Capela de Santo AntĂłnio in the town centre has been venerated since at least 1706. Here you can encounter both a church with a Romanesque predecessor and a chapel whose veneration dates back at least to 1706.
The development of the town centre offers another perspective. Until almost the 20th century, it did not develop significantly because of its proximity to Braga. In the 20th century, urban life shifted along the EN101 to an area away from the town centre, where the Capela de Santo AntĂłnio already stood.
Festivals and Craft Traditions
The Festas de Santo AntĂłnio in Vila Verde still take place over several days. Their programme includes folklore performances, traditional games, exhibitions and horse races. The Marchas Populares continue to be regarded as one of the most representative symbols of the Festas de Santo AntĂłnio. The festival can therefore be understood both through its varied programme and through the symbolic role of the Marchas.
Another festival is the Festa das Colheitas. The municipality of Vila Verde holds it every year on the second weekend in October; it is also known as the “Feira Mostra de Produtos Regionais”. One of the event’s featured dishes is “Arroz de frango Pica no chão”. For planning purposes, the two festivals can be distinguished by their specific features: the Festas de Santo António lasts several days, while the Festa das Colheitas takes place annually in October and features a particular dish.
Crafts are also part of the cultural identity of the municipality of Vila Verde. The Lenços de Namorados are considered a symbol of the municipality’s identity. The embroiderers of Aliança Artesanal have been making reproductions of these handkerchiefs for three decades. Alongside churches and festivals, this offers a textile perspective on local culture, with the embroiderers’ work keeping the tradition alive.
Cycling and Cultural Activities
Vila Verde has an urban cycle route. The municipality also has the shared electric bicycle system “BikeAmor”, which is occasionally used by visitors and tourists. These two features represent different aspects of cycling: a cycle route and a shared electric bicycle system that guests sometimes use.
Another cultural activity is specifically aimed at children: the Biblioteca Municipal Professor Machado Vilela holds the annual “História Andarilha” reading promotion activity for children.
If you are looking for a hotel in Vila Verde, first decide what you would like to focus on during your trip: architectural and local history, festival traditions, textile crafts, cycling or a cultural event for children.
