Cervães combines walking trails with religious and architectural heritage. The three named trails offer different perspectives: riverbanks and nature observation, views of the valley and the Minho, and local history and traditions. To plan your stay, you can therefore start by choosing the theme that interests you most.

Walking trails with different focuses

The Trilho da Água Viva runs along the banks of the Puriço River and passes through areas of high ecological and scenic value. Along the way, you can observe the local fauna and flora. For travellers who want to combine river landscapes with nature observation, this trail has a clear thematic focus.

The Trilho do Horizonte offers viewpoints overlooking the Cávado River valley. It also features panoramic views of the mountains, villages and agricultural fields of the Minho. The trail also passes the São Bento da Ermida Chapel. Those who want to include both on one trail will find landscapes and a religious connection here. Unlike the Trilho da Água Viva, the focus here is on panoramic views rather than observing the riverbanks.

The Trilho Histórico de Cervães invites you to discover the parish’s scenic, religious and historical wealth. It offers insights into local traditions, legends and accounts from different periods of the area’s history. Traditions and legends complement the historical accounts: the trail offers a cultural and historical perspective that extends beyond any single period.

Pilgrimage and sanctuary

A regular event in the annual calendar is the pilgrimage to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho. It takes place every year on the first Sunday in July. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check the specific event details before making your plans.

The sanctuary was built in the 17th century and has a typically Minho-style façade with two tall bell towers. Inside, the altar is set between two large rocks, giving the church the appearance of a cave. The regional character of the façade and the rock-shaped impression of the church interior come together here.

Architectural history and cultural connections

Torre e Casa de Gomariz is a manor house dating from the late 15th century. Vineyards and a five-hectare woodland shape the green landscape in which it stands. In 2015, the manor house was converted into a boutique hotel themed around “Wine & Spa”. Its architectural history and later conversion offer a cultural point of reference distinct from the sanctuary’s religious architecture.

Weaving is also part of Cervães’ cultural identity. A municipal report dated 28 October 2019 described it as a way of life that was still practised in Cervães. This connection to craftsmanship adds another cultural perspective to the themes of local traditions and legends.
