Silva brings together church and local history, running events, and a documented connection to hiking. When planning your stay, it helps to distinguish between these topics: the religious heritage and the history of the Silva family home provide a cultural focus, while the running events can be understood through their specific distances. The hiking information, in turn, relates to a municipal programme and a route description from 2012. You can plan your stay according to whether you are most interested in heritage, a race, or hiking, and then look for hotels in Silva.

Parish Church and House History

The parish of Silva is dedicated to São Julião. The parish church contains an image of São Julião, surrounded by depictions of the four Evangelists. The church is considered very old; no construction date has been recorded. The dedication and the group of images relate to the same saint: São Julião gives the parish its religious focal point, while the four Evangelists frame the image in the church’s art.

The name of the parish leads to another historical trace. It derives from a large house founded by the Silva family. This house has belonged to the Congregation of the Holy Spirit since 1935. The family history, the origin of the place name, and the later institutional ownership history thus stand alongside one another.

Chapel and Religious Traditions

The Chapel of São Bento is located in the garden of Casa da Silva. Its lintel bears an inscription with the year 1578. Unlike the general description of the parish church as very old, the inscription provides a specific dated detail on part of the building. The year belongs to the inscription, not to any recorded construction date for the chapel.

Silva’s religious heritage also includes several roadside shrines to souls in purgatory (alminhas), including those of Santo António, Pena, and Cruzeiro. On Palm Sunday, the blessing of the palm branches was held annually at Silva’s parish cross. These named religious sites thus complement the architectural and artistic evidence with a ceremony from local tradition.

Running Events and Hiking Connections

The Silva Athletics Grand Prix has been held since 1977 and includes a 10 km race. The Caminhada Solidária is 5 km long. Comparing the stated distances, the Grand Prix is therefore twice the distance of the Caminhada Solidária.

Another way to explore the area is through its landscape and hiking trails. In the 2012 municipal walking programme, the panoramic view from the higher part of the parish of Silva, near the Seminário, was a featured landscape point. A 2012 municipal description also mentions the “Entre Caminhos” hiking trail, which included sections of the Way of St. James in the parishes of Carapeços and Silva. One hiking reference names a viewpoint, while the other describes a route with sections of the Way of St. James. Before planning, check whether the current route or the same itinerary is being promoted.

Getting Around Silva

The parish church is near the railway line and National Road 204, which connects Barcelos with Ponte de Lima. This location adds a specific reference to transport routes and the connection between the two towns to the cultural points of interest.
