Cossourado – Hiking along the Neiva and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Cossourado
Cossourado offers ways to plan your trip around routes along the Rio Neiva, the landscape and cultural heritage. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which of these interests will shape your trip: a hiking route, a view of traditional architecture or local customs. These different points of interest give you various ways to plan your stay around a theme.
Hiking along the Rio Neiva
The municipal hiking trail “Trilho das Pontes do Neiva” runs for nine kilometres along the banks of the Rio Neiva between Cossourado and Tregosa. Its name, length and endpoints offer a concrete reference if you would like to include a riverside route in your trip. Check the current conditions for the route before you travel.
Another figure to note is the ECOVIA do NEIVA project: it is approximately 20 kilometres long and divided into three sections. This project information was documented in 2022. The two figures have different emphases: the Trilho is a named route with endpoints, while the ECOVIA is a structured project.
Landscape and buildings
Veiga do Rio de BalugĂŁes para Cossourado is one of the natural areas along the Rio Neiva highlighted by the municipality. The Ponte da Caridade adds a specific place in Cossourado that the municipality recommends visiting. The natural area and the bridge offer two different points of interest: the riverside landscape and a named structure.
Quinta de Agrelo also brings together several aspects of local heritage. It is located in Cossourado on the Caminhos de Santiago route. It comprises a group of traditionally designed buildings closely connected to the landscape. The estate has been owned by the Rosas family for more than 300 years; the wines of Vinha do 9 are also produced there. For your trip planning, these are different aspects of the same place: the pilgrimage route, architecture, family history and wine production.
Customs and cultural heritage
Pão das Almas de Cossourado was nominated in 2020 in the “Rituais e Costumes” category—Rituals and Customs—for the 7 Maravilhas da Cultura Popular. O Pão das Almas is also associated with Cossourado in the municipality’s classification of festivals, fairs and pilgrimages.
An initiative for the Ecomuseu do Neiva included colloquia, interviews and workshops from July to December 2022. Its content was explained at a public meeting on 30 September. The aim was to preserve and enhance the region’s cultural and landscape heritage. This initiative, set in a specific time period, adds the question of how regional heritage should be collected and presented to the themes of hiking and architectural history.
The Festa das Cruzes is also linked to a traditional custom. After a two-year interruption related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the festival resumed. For this resumption, the Junta de Freguesia commissioned the Agrupamento dos Escuteiros 1203 de S. Tiago to make a traditional pilgrimage arch. It was intended for an exhibition of arches from various freguesias; this does not mean that a separate arch for Cossourado was made.
Choose Cossourado to suit the themes you would like to explore during your stay.
