The landscape of the Castro Verde Biosphere Reserve in the Alentejan Campo Branco is a steppe landscape shaped by centuries of human activity connected with nature. Landscape, musical tradition and cultural heritage give a trip different points of focus: birdwatching and routes sit alongside churches, museums, festivals and traditional musical forms. Those looking for a hotel in Castro Verde can plan their travel dates around their interests; some activities are seasonal or depend on current event dates.

Music, Churches and Architectural History

The Viola Campaniça is a traditional string instrument with five courses of strings. Castro Verde is one of the important centres of this regional musical tradition. Cante, a form of choral singing without instruments, is also practised by numerous choirs in Castro Verde. The instrument and the singing represent different forms of musical expression: here, a string instrument meets communal, unaccompanied singing.

The Basílica Real de Castro Verde, also known as the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, was built in 1573 on the orders of King Sebastião in honour of the Battle of Ourique, replacing an earlier church. Its interior features around 60,000 azulejos in the style of Lisbon craftsmen from 1730. The tiles depict the story of D. Afonso Henriques and the Miracle of Ourique. The church thus brings together architectural history and an extensive series of images on historical themes.

The Igreja dos Remédios is also part of the town’s cultural heritage. It dates from the 17th century and preserves traces of the southern Portuguese painters Pardalinho and Diogo Magina.

Museums and Traces of the Past

The Museu da Lucerna displays around 1,000 Roman oil lamps made of fired clay, recovered near Santa Bárbara de Padrões. In Santa Bárbara de Padrões, a Roman settlement includes the remains of a basilica-like religious area. Another way of approaching the past is the Silabário da Espanca: a stone engraved with characters of Phoenician origin dating from the 5th or 4th century BC. The oil lamps, structural remains and inscriptions each draw attention to different material evidence.

The Museu da Ruralidade was created by expanding the former Casa da Leda. It lies on the north-western edge of the village of Entradas, on the Castro Verde plain. Its history links the museum building with the former building; its connection to Entradas gives it a distinct place in the region’s cultural offering.

Birdwatching and Routes

Castro Verde is a birdwatching destination, and there are also routes designed for cyclists. The CEAVG offers guided birdwatching tours on foot or in a 4x4 vehicle, with advance booking. Visitors can also access photographic observation hides on LPN properties in the Castro Verde region. Confirm bookings and availability before travelling. Guided observation tours and routes designed for cyclists thus offer different ways to explore the landscape.

The CM1138 Route – Rota das Abetardas lies in the Castro Verde area, in a great bustard breeding zone. May to September is the recommended period for walking this route. The N123-2 Route – Rota da Batalha de Ourique connects Castro Verde, Geraldos, Cerro de São Pedro das Cabeças and the Ribeira de Cobres. On this route, it is recommended that you walk down the hill from the Cerro and follow the Cobres River, known here as the Ribeira de Cobres.

Other routes differ in the places and endpoints they include. The EM535 Route – Rota da Aldeia Comunitária covers Aivados, Casével and the Almeirim site of the Museu da Ruralidade. The Rota do Museu Vivo follows the IP2, beginning in Ourique and ending in Castro Verde. The routes described therefore range from a connection between named places to a journey with specified start and end points.

Festivals and Culinary Traditions

Events can also play a part in planning a trip. The Feira de Castro takes place every year on the third Sunday in October; check that year’s programme. Entrudanças is an annual, three-day participatory festival in the municipality of Castro Verde. Confirm the current dates before travelling. The Romaria de São Miguel is held in Castro Verde in May.

The Rota das Tabernas includes snacks waiting for participants: Cachola frita, Pica-pau, Torrezmos, olives and bread. The food adds a culinary dimension to the route’s cultural setting.
