Museum and Sacred Art
The Museu Municipal de Ferreira do Alentejo collects, preserves, researches, interprets and presents the tangible and intangible heritage of the Município. It comprises six exhibition units, including archaeology, sacred art, wine and Cante, the municipal archive and traditional arts. The Núcleo Sede has rooms for temporary and thematic exhibitions, an educational service and a laboratory. Visiting hours are listed as Tuesday to Friday, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm, and weekends, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Check the hours before you travel.
The Núcleo de Arte Sacra is located in the Igreja da Misericórdia and focuses on the religious and spiritual activities of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Ferreira do Alentejo since 1516. The church portal draws on the Manueline style: its stone motifs include pine cones, anthropomorphic figures and cord ornaments. The main altarpiece is another precise art-historical detail: it consists of six panels and was created around 1570 by António Nogueira of Évora. A 16th-century painted polyptych can also be seen at the Museu Municipal.
Other buildings add to this picture, spanning more than one period. The Igreja Matriz, also called Nossa Senhora da Assunção, is mentioned in documents dating back to the 14th century. The Capela do Calvário is also known as Santa Maria Madalena or “Igreja das Pedras.” Its circular floor plan is topped by a dome with a lantern.
Roman Traces and Local Traditions
The Estação Arqueológica do Monte da Chaminé was an agricultural Roman villa inhabited from the 1st to the 6th century AD. Archaeological excavations uncovered, among other things, an agricultural cellar there. Another archaeological landmark is Santo Estêvão de Odivelas, where a Roman milestone dating from the 2nd century was found.
Wine and singing take center stage at the Casa do Vinho e do Cante. Located in the former Taberna do Zé Lelito, it preserves the memory of traditional Alentejo taverns, Talha wine and Cante Alentejano. The song “O menino” is sung especially in Peroguarda. Crafts are also part of local history: traditional blacksmithing is still practiced in Ferreira do Alentejo at Armindo Fragoso’s workshop. Traditional Alentejo furniture from Ferreira do Alentejo has a history spanning more than eight decades; in the Freguesia Odivelas, the craft of making mat baskets also continues.
A guided visit to Herdade do Marmelo explains the entire olive oil production process and ends with a tasting. As visitor arrangements may change, it is advisable to inquire in advance. A guided tour by bus and on foot connects the Vila de Ferreira do Alentejo with the Lagar de Azeite Alentejano Oliveira da Serra and Herdade do Pinheiro. Here, too, check whether the tour runs seasonally before making plans.
Waterbirds and Landscapes
The Albufeira de Odivelas is an important gathering place for various waterbirds. At Lagoa dos Patos, on the border between the Concelhos of Ferreira do Alentejo and Alvito, gatherings of ducks and other waterfowl, herons, spoonbills, flamingos, cormorants, sandpipers and stilts can be seen. Sightings vary by season. At the Zona Ribeirinha de Santa Margarida do Sado, a green space offers views of the landscapes along the River Sado.
If you want to combine nature with exercise, Parque de Lazer da Fonte Nova has a picnic area and two fitness circuits for pedestrians, equipped with suitable exercise equipment. This is a different focus from the birdlife around the water: here, the leisure park’s facilities take center stage, while the birds at the water bodies vary with the seasons.
Plan Routes and Dates
The Estrada Nacional 2 connects Chaves and Faro along a 738-kilometer route and is used by cyclists, motorcyclists, tour buses and cars. In the Concelho of Ferreira do Alentejo, the route passes through the towns of Ferreira do Alentejo and Odivelas. This puts the local route information in the context of the N2’s larger course without equating these two town crossings with the entire route.
Two event dates are particularly specific: the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição takes place on December 8, and the Festival Giacometti is scheduled for the first weekend in June. At the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the patron saint of the Vila and the Concelho is venerated, and the church interior is covered with azulejos. Various pilgrimages to the Santuário also take place throughout the year. Check the dates and program for the year you plan to travel.
