Ferreira Do Alentejo offers a focus on cultural history with a range of ways to explore it: archaeological and museum topics, sacred architecture, crafts, and recurring events. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether you are particularly interested in historical periods, architectural features, or cultural traditions.

Museums and historical periods

The Museu Municipal de Ferreira do Alentejo was inaugurated on October 22, 2004, and admitted to the Rede Portuguesa de Museus on May 18, 2010. These two dates mark different stages: the museum’s inauguration and its subsequent admission to the Portuguese museum network. The Estação Arqueológica do Monte da Chaminé, an archaeological site and part of the Museu Municipal, also offers a museum perspective. It is associated with a Roman agricultural villa that was inhabited from the 1st to the 6th century AD. The Núcleo Museológico de Arte Sacra focuses on a different historical layer: it documents the religious and spiritual activities of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Ferreira do Alentejo since 1516. Archaeological settlement and the documented activities of the Santa Casa thus represent different timeframes in the town’s history.

Sacred architecture and its features

The Capela do Calvário is also known as Santa Maria Madalena or Igreja das Pedras. Its circular floor plan, dome, and lantern tower define its architecture; it is also regarded as a landmark of Ferreira Do Alentejo. The history of the Igreja da Misericórdia includes the provenance of one of its architectural elements: its Manueline portal was transferred from the former Capela do Espírito Santo when it was demolished in 1910. On the main façade of the Igreja Matriz, above the portal, is the symbol of the knights of the Ordem de Santiago de Espada. These sites therefore present different architectural points of interest: a floor plan and dome, a portal with a historical provenance, and a façade symbol.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Conceição also brings together architectural and religious elements. Its interior is lined with azulejos. It also houses a small Roca figure, which tradition associates with Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India. This association is part of the local tradition. The sanctuary’s patronal feast is held on December 8; various pilgrimages to the Santuário also take place throughout the year. There is therefore both a fixed date and a religious tradition observed throughout the year.

Crafts, culture, and events

The tradition of hand-forged iron continues in Ferreira Do Alentejo at Armindo Fragoso’s workshop. Another cultural point of interest is the Casa do Vinho e do Cante, located in the premises of the Taberna do Zé Lelito. The Giacometti Festival takes place on the first weekend of June. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates for the edition you want to attend before making plans.

During the grape harvest, a program held annually from Tuesday to Saturday also includes a tasting of seedless grapes. It therefore takes place at a different time of year from the Giacometti Festival or the patronal feast on December 8. These different dates can help you plan a trip around the cultural themes and timing you prefer, without conflating the events.

Getting around the municipality

The route of Estrada Nacional 2 passes through the towns of Ferreira do Alentejo and Odivelas in the MunicĂpio de Ferreira do Alentejo. This route provides a practical orientation within the municipal area alongside its cultural and historical topics. Together with the museums, buildings, and events mentioned above, it gives a concrete picture of the different highlights you can consider when choosing your destination.
