São Marcos da Ataboeira combines a parish shaped by pseudosteppe with a layered cultural history: an Iron Age necropolis, religious buildings, a former wax industry and time-honoured celebrations. When choosing a destination for your hotel stay, these different aspects can help you decide what interests you. The landscape, historic sites and event dates each offer a different perspective on the area.

Location and landscape

A prominent landmark is the Capela de Nossa Senhora de Aracelis. It lies near Monte do Salto, about eight kilometres from São Marcos da Ataboeira. It stands at a high point on the boundary between the municipalities of Castro Verde and Mértola.

The entire parish of São Marcos da Ataboeira lies within a Special Protection Area for steppe birds and is part of the Natura 2000 network. Pseudosteppe is the dominant landscape type in the parish. Steppe birds found in São Marcos da Ataboeira include the great bustard and the little bustard.

The scale matters when interpreting the geography: protected status applies to the entire parish, while the elevated position refers only to the chapel site.

Cultural heritage and history

The Igreja Matriz de São Marcos da Atabueira is a church from the modern era; an entry dated 27 August 2025 records this classification. The Ermida de São Pedro do Soeiro was built at the end of the 14th century by a wealthy landowning family in the parish. The dates emphasise different things: the Ermida is associated with a specific period of construction, while the Igreja Matriz is associated with an entire era.

The Lagar de Cera de São Marcos da Atabueira and the Moinho do Salto are each classified as Grade 3 cultural heritage; the entries are dated 27 August 2025. Cerro da Mina is an Iron Age necropolis in São Marcos da Ataboeira; an archaeological entry dated 27 August 2025 classifies it as such.

The wax industry is another part of the area’s history. São Marcos da Ataboeira once had an important wax mill, associated with beekeeping and the production of beeswax. The area’s history therefore extends beyond buildings and archaeological sites to include its former economic activity.

Traditions throughout the year

The Aleluia tradition takes place every year on the Saturday before Easter. The procession passes through Figueirinha, Guerreiro and Salto before reaching São Marcos da Ataboeira. Bells are rung and houses are blessed along the way.

The traditional Festas de São Marcos take place on 25 April. The date of Aleluia is linked to Easter, while the Festas de São Marcos fall on a fixed calendar date, 25 April. The Saturday before Easter and 25 April thus provide two distinct points of reference in the calendar.
