Praia on Graciosa: Churches, Coast and Nature
Accommodation in Praia
Praia on Graciosa is defined by the distinctive churches in Vila da Praia, the island’s only sandy beach and the natural environment of Ilhéu da Praia. The details differ considerably: at São Mateus, the focus is on architectural history and furnishings, while the Ilhéu is known for its distinctive breeding birdlife and regulated access. A section of the Grande Rota da Graciosa can also be understood through its terrain. This way, before looking for a hotel, you can decide which aspect of the destination interests you most.
Sacred Buildings in Vila da Praia
The Igreja de São Mateus is located in Vila da Praia and is the tallest building on the island of Graciosa. It was originally built in the 16th century and rebuilt in the 19th century. Its furnishings include gilded woodcarvings on the main altar and side altars, Flemish images of saints from the 16th century, and a cabinet organ from the late 18th century. The building’s history and furnishings thus each have their own dates. If you are interested in church art, this building offers both a long architectural history and features from several centuries.
Another local landmark is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, also known as the Igreja da Misericórdia da Vila da Praia. It is located in the centre of Vila da Praia. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Guia is beside the port of Praia. These locations distinguish the sacred buildings: the Conceição is in the centre, while the Ermida is by the port. Only Nossa Senhora da Conceição and Misericórdia da Vila da Praia are two names for the same church.
Coast and Nature on Graciosa
Ilhéu da Praia lies 1.3 kilometres from the coastline of Vila da Praia and is one of the larger islets in the archipelago. Its breeding birdlife is particularly diverse. The endemic Monteiro’s storm petrel (Hydrobates monteiroi) was discovered there; it breeds only on the islets of Graciosa. Access to the Ilhéu is regulated by Portaria No. 65/2018 of 20 June. Check how this regulation is currently being implemented before your trip.
Praia de São Mateus is the only sandy beach on the island of Graciosa. It therefore represents a different coastal feature from the Ilhéu: here, the distinctive feature is the type of beach; there, it is the diverse breeding birdlife and regulated access.
Comparing Terrain and Water Architecture
There is also a specific comparison of terrain for hikers: the section of the Grande Rota da Graciosa in the Praia area is gentler than the higher, more rugged coastal sections near Ponta da Restinga. This comparison applies to these sections of the route and their terrain.
The Arquitetura da Água offers an island-wide perspective. It is considered an important testament to Graciosa’s identity and to the efforts and ingenuity of its people in dealing with water scarcity.
