Guadalupe brings together religious heritage and hiking as distinct travel interests. When planning your stay, you can focus on specific buildings, a long history of churches, a procession or the landmarks of two hiking trails. This places cultural history alongside routes and a viewpoint overlooking the sunset.

Churches and Religious Heritage

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, brought from Mexico, is still housed in the Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe Church. When exploring the religious heritage, the subject is not only the invocation itself but also the explicitly stated origin of the image.

The Guadalupe Church was built to replace an old chapel dating from the 16th century. Construction took about fifty years because an earthquake caused severe damage in the parish. Its building history thus brings together two periods: the earlier chapel and the church’s lengthy construction.

The Impérios also feature distinct architectural details. A crown of the Holy Spirit is located above the door of the Império do Espírito Santo da Beira Mar. By contrast, the Império do Espírito Santo de Santo António da Vitória is a small building with just one door and no windows; it was built in 1918. In one case, a religious symbol above the entrance catches the eye; in the other, the building’s scale, door and lack of windows define its form.

The Império do Espírito Santo de Santo António da Vitória is also associated with a procession accompanied by a philharmonic band. The brotherhood, its families and guests bring the symbols of the Divine to the church. The religious focus is therefore reflected both in the architecture and in a communal act involving the named participants.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

Two hiking trails have different specific landmarks. The Volta à Caldeira – Furna do Enxofre PRC2GRA hiking trail circles the natural monument of Caldeira da Graciosa; visitors can visit the Furna do Enxofre Visitor Centre along the way. Arquitetura da Água I (PR01GRA) starts at Pico da Caldeirinha de Pêro Botelho and circles the crater of its volcanic cone. When planning, the distinction is between the natural monument and visitor centre on the one hand, and the starting point and volcanic crater on the other.

The Miradouro do Pôr do Sol is a semi-suspended viewpoint near Beira Mar da Vitória in Guadalupe, offering views of the sunset. It differs from the hiking trails: the focus here is on the sunset view, while the two trails are characterised by their respective landmarks.

If you are looking for hotels in Guadalupe, you can start by organising your itinerary around these interests: religious heritage, hiking or a sunset view.
