Discover Luz: Routes, a Volcanic Cave and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Luz
Luz brings together several themes to help you plan your trip: routes through a natural monument, a volcanic cave, a bay considered a bathing area, and cultural sites with different points of interest. If you’re looking for a hotel in Luz, this selection can help you choose what to explore based on your interests. The routes differ in their starting and ending points; at the cultural sites, architecture, depictions and water architecture shape what you’ll see.
Routes with different destinations
The Subida ao Cume route starts in the centre of the parish of Luz, opposite the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz. It runs mostly within the Monumento Natural da Caldeira da Graciosa natural monument and passes over the island’s highest point, at 405 metres. The route offers sweeping views of the landscape and leads to Furna do Enxofre. It therefore connects a clear starting point in the centre with the highest point and the cave; elevation, landscape views and volcanic features come together here.
The BaĂa da Folga route also starts in the centre of Luz, near the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, but leads to BaĂa da Folga. The bay is considered a bathing area near the parish of Luz. The difference from the Subida ao Cume route lies in its stated destination: the highest point on the island and Furna do Enxofre are the focus there, while this route leads to the bay. Both routes have a similar starting point in the village, but lead to different destinations.
The first stage of the Grande Rota da Graciosa (East) runs from Barra to Praia to Luz, passes through the Luz area and ends within the parish of Luz. Unlike the two routes that start in the centre, this stage describes a route that passes through Luz and ends there. This also makes it possible to consider Luz as part of a larger, specifically named route.
Furna do Enxofre: Cave and visitor centre
Furna do Enxofre is a unique volcanic cave, 194 metres long and 40 metres high. Inside are a freshwater lake and a mud mofette. Length and height are two separate measurements; the lake and mofette add specific features of the cave’s interior. The Furna do Enxofre visitor centre has information panels and monitors displaying gas readings measured inside the cave.
Cultural sites in Luz
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz has a clearly dated architectural history: its predecessor, built in the 16th century, was destroyed in the 1730 earthquake, and the church was completed in 1738. The dates refer to different stages—the destruction of the predecessor and the completion of the church. Inside are a life-size depiction of Saint Joseph, a depiction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and a contemporary depiction of Our Lady of Luz dating from the second decade of the 20th century.
Another cultural highlight is Xixaras, on Caminho do Tanque, Canada, within the parish of Luz. This water-architecture complex includes a water basin, washing facilities, a fountain and a livestock trough. While the church is characterised by its architectural history and religious depictions, Xixaras puts water architecture centre stage. Together, these sites offer two distinct cultural perspectives on Luz.
