Darłowo combines striking buildings and historic routes with a stretch of coast in Darłówko. When looking for a hotel in Darlowo, you can consider which themes you would like to shape your stay: castle history, architecture, the harbour or nature. Darłówko is a coastal district of Darłowo; it is home to the lighthouse and a fishing and tourist harbour, among other things.

Coast and harbour in Darłówko

The lighthouse stands at the base of the eastern breakwater, where the Wieprza flows into the Baltic Sea. It is 22 metres tall; its light guides vessels to the harbour and reaches almost 30 kilometres. With its rectangular ground plan, it is the only lighthouse in Poland built on this shape. This structure combines maritime navigation with a distinctive architectural form.

The drawbridge over the Wieprza also shapes Darłówko: it connects Darłówko Wschodnie and Darłówko Zachodnie and is considered Poland’s only sliding bridge, as well as one of three bridges of this kind in Europe. In Darłówko Wschodnie, a two-level promenade runs along the top of the coastal breakwater. The lower walkway is 168 metres long, and the upper one is 156 metres long. The harbour adds to this coastal scene: in summer, sightseeing boats modelled on historic ships are available there. If you are considering a trip, check the sailing times in advance.

Castle, museum and religious buildings

The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes was built on an island between 1352 and 1372; its ground plan has largely been preserved to this day. The museum in the castle houses exhibits on interior furnishings, crafts, Pomeranian ethnography, sacred art and Eastern art. A multimedia exhibition explores the life and work of Erik of Pomerania. Its interactive features include games and a multimedia mirror. As the exhibition’s availability may change, check what is currently on offer before your visit.

The Pomeranian Mausoleum in St Mary’s Church contains the sarcophagi of King Erik, Elisabeth, wife of the last Pomeranian duke, and Jadwiga, a princess of Pomerania. The year 1321 is traditionally considered the start of construction of the church. St Gertrude’s Church presents a different architectural style: the 15th-century building is in the Scandinavian Gothic style and has a hexagonal ground plan with a dodecagonal ambulatory. The organs date from 1860 and are used not only for church services but also by Polish and international virtuosos at the annual organ festivals held in summer. It is advisable to check the specific festival dates in advance.

Routes between the town, coast and nature

The literary route “In the Footsteps of Tyrmand’s Heroes” leads from the railway station in Darłowo to the lighthouse in Darłówko. Eight sculptures recall Leopold Tyrmand’s connections with Darłowo. As route markers and artworks may change, check the current situation before setting out.

Other routes offer different points of interest. The green Windmill Route begins at the castle and then leads through Cisowo and along the southern shore of Lake Kopań. The blue Nature Reserve Route starts in Darłówko, ends in Polanów and passes near the Janiewickie Bagno and Wieleń nature reserves. The West Pomeranian section of the Velo Baltica cycling route also passes through Darłowo. The Medieval Monuments Route, also known as the Cistercian Route, runs through eleven coastal towns, including Darłowo. These routes offer some clear points of comparison: the start and end of the blue route, the course of the green Windmill Route, and Darłowo’s place on two long-distance routes.

A nature promenade on the western dune is about 600 metres long and offers views of the Baltic Sea and coastal flora. Many fish species and ducks live in Inkula Park, and occasionally swans can be seen there too; the protected yellow water-lily also grows in the park. The park also has a fenced dog exercise area with equipment and facilities for training. If this area is important to your plans, check its current condition before your visit.

Whether you are interested in architectural history, coastal architecture or paths through green surroundings, the destinations mentioned offer different points of interest without requiring you to focus your stay on just one theme. For a summer trip, the seasonal sightseeing boats and organ festivals may be worth considering; check their sailing times or dates separately. This way, you can tailor your hotel search in Darlowo to the experiences you would like to include during your stay in Darłowo and Darłówko.
