Sohrau (Żory) brings together a variety of themes to consider when planning your trip: a preserved historic urban layout, cultural traditions, Pałac Baranowice, and sports and water activities. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these different highlights can help you get a sense of the destination’s character. The city’s history dates back to the Middle Ages; at the same time, lively traditions and leisure activities are part of Sohrau’s character.

City History and Buildings in Sohrau

The historic urban layout of Żory was established around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries and has been preserved to this day. The partially preserved defensive walls are another testament to the city’s history. They date from the 14th century, are Gothic and built of brick, and run along Ogrodowa Street, formerly Manifestu Lipcowego Street, as well as Męczenników-Oświęcimskich Street. These two streets help pinpoint the locations of the remaining sections of wall without suggesting that they form a single continuous stretch.

The parish church of pw. św. św. Filipa i Jakuba is also one of Żory’s historic buildings. The brick church dates from the 15th century, is Gothic, and has a tower. Together with the older defensive walls, it highlights a clear difference in date: the wall remains date back to the 14th century, while the church is attributed to the 15th century. Visitors interested in historic architecture will find a range of architectural forms and periods in Sohrau, each of which can be explored in its own right.

Święto Ogniowe: A Community Tradition

Today, Święto Ogniowe is a celebration for the entire community of Żory. By a decision dated January 29, 2024, the tradition was added to Poland’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This recognition gives the celebration a special cultural standing; alongside the city’s stone-built historical landmarks, it represents a living tradition. Sohrau’s cultural character therefore encompasses not only historic buildings but also a celebration that belongs to the city’s community.

Pałac Baranowice and Its Park Surroundings

The historic and vibrant Pałac Baranowice is located on the edge of an atmospheric park and is part of the Żory-Baranowice Park-Palace Complex. The grounds include well-kept avenues, illuminated benches and natural monuments. Historic architecture and landscaped outdoor areas thus come together in one place. The palace also hosts regional education activities in Żory. This connects the site with educational offerings without reducing its character to the building alone or to its park surroundings alone.

Sports and Water at Rajska Fala

Rajska Fala in Żory-Rój offers a different focus from the historic buildings: it has a heated stainless-steel swimming pool with water playgrounds, massage jets and slides. The Rajska Fala leisure centre also has renovated tennis courts and beach volleyball courts. Water activities and ball sports are therefore available as distinct leisure options. For trip planning, this offers a clear contrast to the city’s cultural themes: you can weigh up whether city history, tradition and architecture or sports and water should take centre stage during your stay.

The Muzeum Ognia in Żory also offers something distinctive. It combines educational and entertaining functions. Together with Święto Ogniowe, it presents two different ways of engaging with the theme of fire: a museum with educational and entertainment functions, and a tradition that is now a celebration for the entire community. These places and themes give you a choice of different travel interests, rather than reducing Sohrau to a single landmark.
