Jaworzno: GEOsfera, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Jaworzno
Fossil-bearing rock layers, an arboretum on a former quarry site, nature reserves and circular routes of varying lengths give Jaworzno several distinct points of interest for a trip. Geological history, landscapes, outdoor activities, water recreation and culture offer different ways to plan your visit.
Geological History and Changing Landscapes
GEOsfera is located in the depression of the former Sadowa Góra Triassic limestone quarry. Fossil-bearing Triassic rock layers are exposed there, containing remains of crinoids, molluscs, cephalopods, fish and a Nothosaurus. If you are interested in geological history, these rock layers and the remains preserved in them offer a direct way to explore the subject.
Arboretum Park Gródek covers 58.54 hectares of former dolomite quarries belonging to the former Szczakowa cement works. Its landscape ranges from warm-loving dry grasslands and meadows to rocky habitats, wetlands and bodies of water, as well as pine forests and oak-hornbeam forests. A distinctive winding path runs through the Wydra reservoir, offering views of the surroundings from the water. Here, you can experience a variety of landscapes and enjoy a special perspective across the water.
GEOsfera can be reached on PKM Jaworzno city bus route 304, getting off at the “GEOsfera” stop. Check the timetable before travelling, as transit information may change.
Natural Areas and Views
The Dolina Żabnika nature reserve covers 42 hectares and has been protected since June 1996. You can reach it on foot or by bicycle via the green trail. The Dobra-Wilkoszyn protected landscape area was established to protect rare plants and sulphur-rich water springs.
Góra Przygoń offers a different perspective. At almost 355 metres above sea level, it is the highest elevation in Jaworzno; from there, you can look out over the entire city.
Water Recreation at Zalew Sosina
Zalew Sosina lies in eastern Jaworzno, in the Pieczyska district. It has a supervised swimming area and pedal boat and kayak rentals. Swimming is seasonal; check before travelling whether the swimming area and rentals are currently available.
Compare Cycling and Walking Routes
The black-marked cycling loop around Jaworzno is 48.5 kilometres long. The red walking trail is a 58.4-kilometre circular route that starts and ends at PKP Jaworzno Szczakowa railway station. This lets you compare two different types of route: a cycling loop and a longer circular walking route with a named start and end point.
Culture, Collections and the Cityscape
The Muzeum Miasta Jaworzna collects and exhibits objects of material culture and works of art directly connected with Jaworzno and its region. The collection began with old mining maps and plans acquired from mines. Alongside geological history, this offers a direct insight into the museum’s collection history.
The history of the Kolegiata also offers its own connection to the past: the parish of the Kolegiata in Jaworzno has a history spanning more than 700 years; the church in Jaworzno was elevated to the status of a Kolegiata in 1997. The Rynek stands out for its unusual, irregular triangular shape. The museum, Kolegiata and market square offer different cultural perspectives on Jaworzno.
