Rybnik: Mining History, Churches and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Rybnik
Rybnik has a distinctive attraction in the Zabytkowa Kopalnia Ignacy: a steam engine, science centre and observation tower stand alongside an interactive exhibition. You can also explore the city through its different architectural periods, a natural spring and cycling routes. This lets you shape your stay around industrial heritage, religious architecture and outdoor activities.
Industrial History, Science and Views
Demonstrations of the steam engine take place at the Zabytkowa Kopalnia Ignacy on Sundays. From April to September, they start at 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00; from October to March, demonstrations take place at 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00. If you plan to include this in your itinerary, take the seasonally varying times into account when planning your day.
The site is also home to SOWA, a small science centre created in collaboration with the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw. The interactive exhibition “Wiek Pary” consists of storytelling and exploration stations. This brings different approaches to science and technology together: a steam engine demonstration and stations designed for exploring and investigating.
The observation tower at the Zabytkowa Kopalnia Ignacy is 46 metres high. Its viewing platform offers a 360-degree panoramic view. The exhibition, demonstrations and tower each have their own focus, so when planning your visit you can choose which of these interests you most.
Rybnik and Its Architectural History
Rybnik is located in the Rybnik Plateau, in the southwestern part of the Silesian Voivodeship and within the Kotlina Raciborsko-Oświęcimska. The city lies at an elevation of 210 to 290 metres above sea level, on the Nacyna and Ruda rivers. This setting provides a backdrop to the city’s diverse places and attractions.
The Minor Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua in Rybnik is a Neo-Gothic church. It was built between 1903 and 1906 to a design by architect Ludwik Schneider. The Edukatorium Juliusz is housed in the former Juliusz hospital complex. The site’s history dates back to the start of work on the hospital complex in 1868.
A much older religious building is the wooden Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria and Our Lady of the Rosary in Wielopole. It dates from around 1543 and features Late Gothic ornamental and figurative polychromes. The Corpus Christi Church in Jankowice was probably built around 1670. Its furnishings include three pseudo-Baroque altars, a tabernacle from the second half of the 17th century and a Baroque organ dating from around 1700.
The buildings and their furnishings point to different eras: in Wielopole, Late Gothic polychromes define the wooden church, while in Jankowice the pseudo-Baroque altars and historic furnishings stand out. The Neo-Gothic basilica in Rybnik adds a church building from the early 20th century to this picture.
Spring, Pilgrimage Site and Cycling Routes
Studzienka is a natural spring in Podlesie Forest, near Shaft IV of the Jankowice coal mine, and is considered a tourist attraction. The site is also the setting for numerous religious celebrations and pilgrimages. Nature and religious tradition are equally integral to the character of this place.
Two routes of different lengths provide options for cycling trips. Circular cycling route No. 290 around Rybnik-Boguszowice is 14.20 kilometres long. The 41-kilometre circular cycling route from Rybnik via Rudy runs mostly through green areas. If you are comparing the routes by distance, the loop around Boguszowice is the shorter option; the route via Rudy is considerably longer and is distinguished by running mostly through green areas. Check the current route before setting out.
