The Parish Complex: History and Features

The complex of the parish church of St. John the Baptist in Poczesna comprises the church and the rectory; its address is ul. Strażacka 9. The parish was founded on 12 July 1606. However, the present-day parish church was not built until between 1870 and 1877, and was consecrated on 14 September 1878. The dates of the parish’s founding, the construction period and the consecration therefore refer to different stages: the earlier date refers to the parish, while the later dates relate to the present church building.

The furnishings of the parish church offer further specific insights into its religious art. The main altar is made of wood in the Baroque style and features images of the Holy Trinity and St. John the Baptist. There are also two wooden Baroque side altars. The wooden pulpit is decorated with sculptures of the four Evangelists. The motifs appear in different forms: images on the main altar and sculptures of the Evangelists on the pulpit.

The Chapel and Remembrance of 1945

The chapel in Poczesna was built in 1914 by the “Korwinów” brickyard. A repaired breach in its left wall recalls the bombing in the area on 17 January 1945. The year it was built and the trace of the repair thus connect the chapel’s history with a specific reminder of the events of the war.

Landscape and Destinations in the Gmina Poczesna

For nature-related attractions and routes, the Gmina Poczesna is the relevant administrative area. Part of the “Orlich Gniazd” Landscape Park lies within the gmina. The many forest areas offer opportunities to spend time outdoors and pick mushrooms. There are also several signposted cycling routes in the gmina; their status may change. If you are planning a bike ride, check the current route information in advance.

The geological and natural history educational trail at the school complex in Wrzosowa officially opened in 2010 and has four educational stations. The trail includes Wzgórze Kamionka, a former Jurassic limestone quarry site in Wrzosowa. The stations and former quarry site give the trail a specific focus on geology and natural history. Check the trail’s current status before making specific plans.
