A medieval street layout, museums, historic memorial sites and woodland landscapes shape Beuthen. At the Rynek, the Market Square, the city’s history and architecture come together; the beech forest, woodland trails and narrow-gauge railway offer further highlights. This makes it possible to plan a stay that combines culture, nature and industrial heritage.

Rynek, Cityscape and Architectural History

The medieval street layout is arranged around a central market square. Streets intersect with ring roads that run parallel to the former defensive walls. The Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands at the Rynek. It is Beuthen’s oldest building and dates back to the first half of the 13th century. Beuthen’s architecture also tells the story of different eras: it represents all the architectural styles and trends of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

Museums and Memorial Sites

The Upper Silesian Museum (Muzeum Górnośląskie) collects archaeological, ethnographic and natural history exhibits, historical documents and significant works of art, and makes them available to visitors. Its exhibitions are located at two addresses in Beuthen: pl. Jana III Sobieskiego 2 and ul. Wojciecha Korfantego 34.

ProFort Centrum - Miechowice Shelter presents exhibitions about Miechowice, the fighting there in 1945, the Upper Silesian Tragedy after 1945, the Second World War and mysteries connected with Beuthen. The ProFort Centrum shelter houses the Izba Pamięci (Memorial Room). Dedicated to January 1945, it features photographs and a multimedia presentation about the events of that month.

The Silesian Opera (Opera Śląska) is also notable for its unique architecture. Miejski Park im. Franciszka Kachla was entered in the Katowice Voivodeship Register of Monuments in 1992. The aircraft shelter in Miechowice is about 100 metres long; if you would like to visit, check visiting arrangements before travelling.

Woodland Landscapes and Trails

Segiet Nature Reserve protects part of the natural beech forest on Srebrna Góra, at the boundary between Beuthen and Tarnowskie Góry. Around 60 bird species breed there, and 25 mammal species occur in the reserve. An educational trail was created and published in guidebook form in 1997.

In the northwest of Beuthen lies Miechowicka Ostoja Leśna, a natural and scenic complex covering about 305.60 hectares. The woodland trails pass small ponds and old trees, including tulip trees, arborvitae and California firs. The complex is also used by walkers and cyclists from other parts of the city. Walking paths and a footbridge are among the park facilities in Mickiewicza Park.

Narrow-Gauge Railway and Industrial Heritage

The Beuthen narrow-gauge railway runs for 21 kilometres and starts at the narrow-gauge platform at the main railway station. Since 2002, it has operated exclusively for tourism. The Upper Silesian Narrow-Gauge Railways (Górnośląskie Koleje Wąskotorowe) are among the several dozen sites on the Industrial Monuments Route (Szlak Zabytków Techniki). This route connects Silesia’s most significant industrial sites of tourist, historical or architectural interest. If you plan to take the train during your stay, check the current timetable in advance.
