Strzelce Opolskie Municipality: Churches, Parks and History
Accommodation in Strzelce Opolskie Municipality
Strzelce Opolskie brings together historic buildings, surviving fragments and parks that differ in age and location. To help orient yourself, two questions are useful: What period interests you, and which places are connected by their location? The castle ruins, castle gate and small park can be understood in relation to their locations; churches, remains of the town walls and dated records add to the picture of the town’s history. This allows you to focus on the historical themes that interest you most.
Castle Ruins and Parks
Among the notable attractions are the ruins of a medieval castle of the Piast dukes dating from the 14th century. The small park lies south of the castle ruins. Parkowa Street separates it from the much newer large park. The historic castle gate on Zamkowa Street leads to the castle and park and is one of the few surviving elements of the former Renard family estates. The Masztalarnia stands in the small park, a building that once housed a stable. It lies on the way from the castle ruins into the small park.
Churches and Remains of the Town Walls
The churches offer different architectural and dating references. The Catholic Church of St. Lawrence was built before 1290. The wooden Catholic Church of St. Barbara stands in a Catholic cemetery and is dated to 1505. The Protestant Church of Corpus Christi was built in 1825–1826 to plans by Ernest Samuel Friebel. The dates vary in their precision: the construction of St. Lawrence is dated to before 1290, St. Barbara is dated to 1505, and Corpus Christi is dated to the period 1825–1826. In the case of St. Barbara, its wooden construction and location in the cemetery are additional distinguishing features.
Only fragments of the medieval town walls survive. One remnant lies opposite the Church of Corpus Christi on Opolska Street; another is in the north, by a historic tower next to the Church of St. Lawrence. The two locations can therefore each be associated with a different church: Corpus Christi on Opolska Street and St. Lawrence by the northern tower. Individual traces of the fortifications thus stand alongside churches whose construction dates range from before 1290 to the 19th century.
Town Hall and Fountain
The town hall is another historic landmark. The town hall of Strzelce Opolskie is documented in a municipal register from 1581. In 1929, a fountain featuring a monument of a medieval hunter was erected in front of the town hall to replace an old fountain; the figure was cast at the Royal Foundry in Gliwice. For the chronology, it is important to note that 1581 refers to the town hall, 1929 to the construction of the fountain, and Gliwice to the place where the figure was cast. The monument depicts a medieval hunter; 1929 dates the construction of the fountain, not the subject depicted.
