Wschowa is a destination for travelers who would like to include historic buildings and a museum in their travel plans. Its attractions offer a variety of highlights: medieval fortifications, architecture from different periods and collections on the city’s history. When planning a visit to the Lapidarium, it is also important to take its fixed opening hours and conditions for guided visits into account.

City History in its Walls and Bridge

The city walls of Wschowa are a valuable example of medieval urban fortifications. The surviving sections include stretches of wall, a gate tower, a moat and an embankment. In the 19th century, the fortifications were transformed into a promenade and gardens. Thus, both the medieval complex and its later transformation shape the history of the city walls.

Lwi Mostek reveals another connection between historical periods: the bridge acquired its present appearance in the second half of the 19th century, in the eclectic style. The sandstone lion figure standing in the center, by contrast, is in the Rococo style and was probably created toward the end of the 18th century. When interpreting the site, it is worth distinguishing the bridge’s later appearance from the probably older figure.

Architecture and Museum

Kripplein Christi is a Protestant church complex dating from the early 17th century. Biały Domek, also called Domek Mleczny (“Milk Pavilion”), is a notable example of modernist architecture in Wschowa. The two buildings offer different points of interest: the denomination and date of construction are specified for Kripplein Christi, while Biały Domek is identified by its architectural style. Together with the eclectically designed Lwi Mostek, they offer an overview of different architectural highlights.

The Muzeum Ziemi Wschowskiej preserves regional collections on archaeology, ethnography, history and art history. A particular focus is the history of the royal city of Wschowa. The museum also promotes musical culture through temporary exhibitions, lectures, presentations, concerts and meetings with well-known instrumentalists and soloists. Individual events and dates may vary; check the current program before traveling.
