Trzciel brings together several themes that can be given different emphasis when planning a stay: medieval history, hiking and cycling trails, and a kayaking route on the Obra. The historic town plan and the tradition of willow weaving also give the town a cultural dimension. The routes are described with specific destinations, lakes and stops along the way. This lets you shape your stay around whether local history, a land route or a stretch on the water is your priority.

History and Townscape

Trzciel is home to a medieval fortified settlement dating from the mid-13th century. The historic urban plan offers another glimpse into the past; the municipal development strategy for 2023–2031 lists it among the significant historic cultural assets. The two features have different points of emphasis: the fortified settlement is a specific structure dated to the mid-13th century, while the town plan concerns the historic form of the town. You can therefore consider these aspects separately when exploring Trzciel’s cultural heritage.

A 2012 publication by the State Forests describes willow weaving as a hallmark of Trzciel. It describes the surrounding area as having been shaped for centuries by abundant stands of wild willows, which have served and continue to serve as a raw material for wickerwork. Alongside the historic townscape, this represents a craft tradition whose materials are tied to the landscape around Trzciel.

Hiking Trails with Different Destinations

For hikers, two routes are easy to distinguish. The nature trail starts in Trzciel, runs along the edge of the Obra Valley and ends at Łysa Góra. The blue hiking trail leads from Trzciel to Pszczew, passing Lakes Konin, Wielkie and Chłop along the way. Łysa Góra is the destination of the nature trail; the blue trail connects two towns and names three lakes along its route. The place and lake names give you a clear idea of which of the two routes best suits your plans.

Cycling Routes and Navigation

Three cycling routes are listed, each with a different color and route description. Red Cycling Route I runs from the Czarna Droga nature reserve via Brójce, Chociszewo and Jasieniec to Trzciel. Blue Cycling Route I runs from Lake Konin through Trzciel and Lutol Mokry to the road to Dąbrówka Wielkopolska. Green Cycling Route I runs from the bridge over the Obra near Rybojady via Rybojady to Trzciel. The red and green routes end in Trzciel, while the blue route continues from there through Lutol Mokry to the road to Dąbrówka Wielkopolska. A cycling map of the entire Trzciel municipality is also available.

Trzciel on the Obra and in the Landscape

The Obra offers another way to experience the area: kayakers can stop in Trzciel, visit the town and buy supplies for the rest of their trip. Trzciel is thus described as a stop along the water route where a visit to the town and stocking up before paddling on can go hand in hand.

The lakes and forests around Trzciel are considered suitable for recreation. The “Rybojady” nature reserve lies 4 km northwest of Trzciel and protects one of the largest peat bogs in the Lubusz Lakeland.
