Sanctuary: History and Architecture
The sanctuary in Rokitno was recognized as a Monument of History by an ordinance of the President of the Republic of Poland dated November 20, 2024. It is one of the few surviving material records of Cistercian activity in the region and has been a center of Marian devotion without interruption since the second half of the 17th century. The miraculous image in Rokitno was recognized as miraculous on March 4, 1670. The recognition of the image in 1670 falls within the same second half of the 17th century, when the sanctuary became a continuous center of Marian devotion.
The Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Rokitno was built between 1740 and 1762. Its vault is decorated with 18th-century polychrome painting, meaning a multicolored painted design. Those interested in church architecture can consider the construction period and the painted decoration as two distinct aspects of Baroque sacred architecture. The year 1758 falls within the 1740–1762 construction period.
The sanctuary also includes a museum and a garden. If you would like to include them in your plans, check visiting arrangements in advance.
