The Vistula forms the western boundary of Opole County and is considered a major tourist attraction in the county. Landscape parks, striking gorges and archaeological sites give the region several other, very different points of interest. Churches and historic complexes are also among the destinations you can consider when planning your stay.

Landscape Parks and Distinctive Landforms

The Wrzelowiecki Landscape Park lies entirely within Opole County. Established in 1990, it covers 4,998 hectares, and its protected zone covers 13,625 hectares. Its defining landscape features include loess gorges, cultural heritage sites with the remains of palace parks, and natural forests. The forests are home to valuable flora, including steppe communities. Gorges, traces of history and natural vegetation thus come together in this landscape.

The Kazimierski Landscape Park has a different geographical scope: the part located in Opole County covers 1,690 hectares. Its protected zone covers 4,560 hectares and lies within the municipalities of Karczmiska and WilkĂłw. The Skarpa Dobrska nature reserve also features a striking landform: its gorges reach depths of up to 40 metres. Xerothermic grasslands grow on the steep limestone and loess slopes. For your nature itinerary, you can therefore distinguish between wooded landscapes and steep, open slopes as different highlights.

Archaeological Sites and Group Activities

The early medieval Chodlik hillfort is an archaeological site covering 9 hectares, with three concentric ramparts. The area gives an idea of the site’s scale, while the three rings describe its defensive layout. Grodzisko w Żmijowiskach offers a different archaeological experience: this open-air archaeological museum features reconstructed fortifications, part of a palisade, a gate and several residential huts. Here, defensive structures and dwellings are distinct elements of the reconstructed complex.

For organised groups, Grodzisko Żmijowiska offers themed tours, ceramics workshops and the outdoor game “In Search of the Lost Treasure” during the season from May to September. Check the dates before visiting. The Experimental Archaeology Centre focuses on historical pottery-making, metallurgy, tar production and food preparation. It also currently invites visitors to develop archaeological experiments.

Churches, Monastery Complex and the Vistula Valley

Chodel is home to the mid-16th-century Gothic-Renaissance parish church of the Holy Trinity and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its distinctive features include the original rib vault in the presbytery and the Renaissance tombs of the Maciejewski family. The building’s history and the tombs offer different points of interest: sacred architecture on the one hand and family history on the other.

Józefów nad Wisłą is home to a Bernardine monastery complex comprising the Baroque Corpus Christi Church, built between 1730 and 1743, the former Bernardine monastery, a bell tower and a grand gateway. Also in Józefów, the park of the 18th-century palace complex offers a view of the Vistula Valley. Another trace of the region’s craft tradition is the Gajewski family pottery workshop in Bęczyn, documented since 1753.

Routes and Regional Orientation

The “Dolina Chodelki” route begins on the border between Opole County and Lublin County and ends in Podgórz. In the wider region, the themed Grodziska nad Chodelką walking trail runs for around 15 kilometres past four marked early medieval Slavic hillforts dating from the 8th to the 10th century; information boards accompany the stops. The details provide different points of reference: the start and end points are given for “Dolina Chodelki”, while the trail’s length and historic destinations are highlighted for the walking route.
