Hrubieszów: Burgwall, Museums and Bug Valley
Accommodation in Hrubieszów
The Hrubieszowski District lies in the Bug Valley. At Gródek, where the Huczwa meets the Bug, river scenery and archaeological history come together: the Burgwall preserves the remains of the historic castle of Wołyń, one of the so-called Czerwińsk castles. Culture, scenery and activities offer a variety of reasons to explore Hrubieszów and the district.
Museum and Cultural History
The Dwór Du Chateau was converted for museum use. The Muzeum im. ks. Stanisława Staszica is housed in the main building and the eastern annex. One exhibition is devoted to the Towarzystwo Rolnicze Hrubieszowskie, founded by Stanisław Staszic. The archaeological department also presents exhibitions on the prehistoric settlement of the Hrubieszów area. This brings two distinct time periods together in one museum: early settlement and the history of an agricultural society founded by Staszic.
Religious history is another part of the region’s cultural heritage. The Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Hrubieszów was built in 1875. The main altar of the Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Sokalskiej houses the image of Matka Boska Sokalska. Together with the museum’s exhibits, these sites offer the opportunity to put together a varied cultural itinerary combining archaeology, regional social history and religious art.
The Hrubieszowski Dom Kultury offers a different kind of cultural experience, hosting concerts, picnics and workshops. These events differ from a museum visit and provide further cultural options to consider when planning your stay.
River Scenery and Viewpoints
The observation tower in Gródek stands on the Królewski Kąt escarpment and offers a view of the Błonia Nadbużańskie ecological reserve. The named viewpoint and the surrounding landscape destination go hand in hand here. The Hrubieszowski District also includes Strzelecki Landscape Park and the Nadbużański Protected Landscape Area. These protected areas add further nature destinations to the Bug Valley scenery that you can consider alongside the region’s cultural and historical sites.
Cycling, Hiking and Activities
Hrubieszów is a useful starting point for planning cycling trips: all four cycle routes begin and end in the town. Hiking routes have a different connection to the town: a 184.5 km hiking trail ends in Hrubieszów. Check the trail’s name and markings locally before setting out. The two options therefore differ in their stated starting and ending points.
There are also kayaking routes on the Bug in the Hrubieszowski District. In Hrubieszów, the Hrubieszowski Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji provides kayaks and a climbing wall, with an instructor, free of charge in spring and summer. As seasonal availability and reservation conditions may change, contact the centre before your visit.
The themed village Einstein na Łące in Stefankowice-Kolonia showcases unusual physical and chemical phenomena. A municipal description dated 31 January 2021 presents these demonstrations; check before travelling whether the programme is currently available.
Events as a Reason to Visit
Important events in the Hrubieszowski District include the Biesiada Archeologiczna in Masłomęcz, Granica 835 – Europejskie Dni Dobrosąsiedztwa in Kryłów/Krecziw, and the Powiatowy Nadbużański Jarmark Kulinarny in Horodło. Their names point to different themes, from archaeology and cross-border neighbourly relations to food. Check the dates for each event separately before setting your travel dates.
