Tomaszowski: Renaissance, memorial sites and cycling routes
Accommodation in Tomaszowski
Tomaszów Lubelski combines a preserved Renaissance town plan with historic buildings, memorial sites and named routes. This gives you different options when planning your trip: cultural history in town or routes with a clearly named destination or specified distance. Tomaszów Lubelski is also considered an excellent base for exploring Roztocze.
Cultural history in the town plan
The Renaissance Market Square is the centre of Tomaszów Lubelski’s historic town plan. The plan has been preserved to this day, with one important exception: the western part was destroyed during the last war. The Salt Market was established as a result of the salt-storage privilege granted to the town. This makes it possible to distinguish between the preserved town layout and the history of a market whose establishment was linked to a specific privilege.
The Baroque wooden church on Kościelna Street was built in 1627 and is described as the town’s most valuable historic monument. Behind the church, clear traces of the former defensive walls and town moat remain. These architectural traces add tangible evidence of earlier fortifications to the picture of the town plan. The Orthodox church next to the market dates from the late 19th century and adds another period of construction to the historic surroundings.
Memorial sites and museum
A monument at the southeastern corner of the market commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of 3 May. Another monument in front of the town hall commemorates the battles for Tomaszów Lubelski. The memorial sites thus refer to different subjects and are located in two separate places.
The Muzeum Janusza Petera offers another cultural perspective. Its collection comprises around 15,000 exhibits covering archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnography and art. The subjects therefore extend beyond archaeology and history to include numismatics, ethnographic objects and art. Together with the buildings and monuments, this offers a choice between the town’s history in public spaces and a collection spanning several fields.
Named routes and their destinations
Three routes can be distinguished by their endpoints. The Szlak Historyczny runs from Tomaszów Lubelski to Turkowice, the Szlak Wolnościowy from Tomaszów Lubelski to Hrebenne, and the Szlak Walk Partyzanckich from Tomaszów Lubelski to Bodaczów. Turkowice, Hrebenne and Bodaczów are the respective named destinations that distinguish these routes.
For the cycling routes, both starting points and distances are given. The “Bezdroża Łaszczówki” route is 28.4 kilometres long and starts in Tomaszów Lubelski. “Wzgórze Wapielnia i fragment Szlaku geoturystycznego Roztocza środkowego” covers 46.5 kilometres and starts in the town park. The “Dookoła Tomaszowa” route is 73.1 kilometres long and starts at the town park. Based on the stated distances, the options range from 28.4 to 73.1 kilometres; the starting points also differ.
Another route is “Na szumy w Suścu,” at 43.2 kilometres. It includes a section of the eastern “Green Velo” cycling route. So, alongside routes with starting points in Tomaszów Lubelski, the options also include a route with a stated connection to Green Velo.
