Susiec brings together hiking trails and natural and cultural attractions that can be planned in different ways. The blue Szlak Szumów is a circular trail starting at the railway station, while the yellow-marked Szlak Południowy leads to Narol. There is also an observation tower in Susiec, historic sites and destinations in the surrounding area. When planning your stay, the route type, walking time and specific destination are more useful than simply looking at the number of kilometres.

Hiking trails and walking times

The blue Szlak Szumów is 17 km long and begins and ends at the railway station in Susiec. The full circular route takes about six hours on foot, excluding the suggested shortcut via the yellow trail. This time estimate applies to the complete loop, not just to a single destination along the way.

The yellow-marked Szlak Południowy is about 17 km long. This route also starts at Susiec railway station and passes the Jeleń Waterfall, the Nad Tanwią Nature Reserve, Rebizanty, Korkosze and Huta Szumy before reaching Narol. The distances are similar: 17 km for the blue circular trail and about 17 km for the yellow trail. The main difference when choosing between them is therefore the route: a loop starting and ending in Susiec, or a trail passing through the named places and continuing to Narol.

Waterfalls, wetland and views

On the nearby blue Szlak Szumów, about a 30-minute walk from the starting point, there is a 1.5-metre-high waterfall on the Jeleń. It is protected as a natural monument. The nearby Nad Tanwią Nature Reserve protects particularly valuable sections of the valleys of the Jeleń and Tanew rivers, with rows of small waterfalls. Established in 1958, it covers about 41 hectares and lies at an elevation of approximately 235 metres above sea level. This means that a single protected waterfall and stretches of river with rows of waterfalls offer distinct natural attractions.

The nearby Szlak Szumów also passes a reed-covered wetland, considered a habitat for birds, about an hour and a half’s walk from the starting point. In Susiec, the observation tower offers views of striped fields and the extensive Puszcza Solska forest complex. There is a bicycle shelter and benches next to the viewpoint.

Culture and history

Susiec is home to the historic Church of Saint John of Nepomuk. A monument to Kargul and Pawlak stands at the entrance to the village. The two sites offer different cultural highlights: a historic church in the village and a monument at its entrance.

The nearby Wzgórze Kościółek, also known as Zamczysko, is surrounded by an earth rampart marking the site of a castle dating from the 12th to 13th centuries. A cross and a monument commemorate insurgents and partisans who hid there during the January Uprising and the last war. The hill thus brings together a medieval castle site and memorials to later periods of conflict. From Susiec, it can be reached on foot in about an hour and a half via the blue Szlak Szumów. This time estimate is for the walk to the hill; the wetland on the Szumów Trail is also about an hour and a half’s walk from the starting point, but it is a different destination.

In nearby Oseredek, the Fire Museum displays historic fire pumps, fire engines and uniforms. If you plan to visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
