The Widawa Valley in the south of Oleśnicki County offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and kayaking. There are also specific destinations in Oleśnica, Bierutów and Twardogóra: castles and churches, medieval remains, museum collections and protected natural areas. In Oleśnicki, outdoor activities sit alongside history that can be read in its buildings and collections.

Cycling and Water Routes

The green-marked “Trasa Doliny Widawy” cycling route is about 30 km long and starts at Bierutów PKP railway station on Kolejowa Street. Markings and route conditions may change; check both before setting off. Another option is the red “Duża pętla twardogórska” cycling route: it is 46.5 km long and starts at the Gminny Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji in Twardogóra. Bicycles and necessary equipment such as helmets, air pumps and child seats can be rented there; overnight accommodation is also available at the starting point. If you plan to use these services, check their current availability.

A water route of more than 40 kilometres also runs along the Widawa from Bierutów towards Wrocław. In Bierutów, there is a prepared launch site for putting kayaks onto the Widawa kayaking route. Planning therefore involves two separate questions: which route would you like to cycle, and is a kayaking trip on the river an option? River conditions can vary by season; check them before setting off.

Recreation by the Water and Trails in the Municipality

At Zalew Stradomia, facilities include a 300-metre sandy beach, a supervised swimming area, and seasonal kayak and pedal-boat rentals. A beach volleyball court, a basketball court, boules lanes and a children’s playground with a sandpit add to the facilities on site. As facilities and rentals may be seasonal, it is worth checking before your visit.

The recreational trail along the Skorynia lies in two areas bordering the river. Walking and jogging paths run along both sides of the river; there is also a children’s playground and a boules area. The municipality of Twardogóra also has hiking, cycling, recreational, walking and educational trails, as well as an equestrian trail. This makes it possible to include different ways of enjoying the outdoors in your travel plans.

Nature in Twardogóra

The municipality of Twardogóra includes areas belonging to the Natura 2000 programme, a network of European protected areas. The “Torfowisko koło Grabowna” nature reserve lies between Grabowno Wielkie and Twardogóra and was designated a nature reserve in 1980. If you want to include protected areas in your plans, check their current boundaries.

Castles, Churches and City History

The Castle of the Dukes of Oleśnica, also known as Oleśnica Castle or the Castle in Oleśnica, is considered Oleśnica’s most valuable historic building and one of the largest and best-preserved castles in Lower Silesia. Over the course of its history, it existed as a medieval castle complex, a Gothic castle and a Renaissance residence of the dukes, and underwent several modernisations.

The Minor Basilica of St John the Apostle in Oleśnica is considered one of the oldest churches in Silesia. A chained library founded by Charles II in 1594 still exists in the same church interior. A new brick town hall was also built in Oleśnica in 1410, according to J. Sinapius. These buildings represent different chapters in the city’s history, from the history of the town hall to its religious and scholarly traditions.

In Bierutów, the defensive walls probably date from the first half of the 14th century; much of their original course has been preserved. Today, only the tower, without its spire, remains of the town hall. Its construction is also thought to date from the first half of the 15th century. The two remains show in different ways what survives of the city’s former buildings.

Collections and Mementos

The “Muzeum Szkolne Ziemi Twardogórskiej” exhibition opened to the public on 15 February 1977. The Museum of the Twardogóra Region contains printed materials, documents, coins, examples of material culture and bladed weapons. The historical mementos have been collected since 1957, at the initiative of history teacher and later school principal Alojzy Zielecki. Before visiting, check the current access arrangements.

Twardogóra is also home to a private collection of 30 fragments of the Berlin Wall, assembled and made accessible by Ludwik Wasecki. As access may change, check availability before your visit.
