Bierutów can be explored through both its architectural history and its cycling and kayaking tours. If you are looking for a hotel in Bierutów, you can plan your stay around these interests: the historic town plan and buildings form the cultural focus, while starting points, route lengths and journey times help structure your tour planning.

Townscape and Town Hall

Bierutów is shaped by a well-preserved medieval town plan. The ring of town walls was probably built in the first half of the 14th century on the site of an earlier timber-and-earth fortification. In the 15th and early 16th centuries, it was reinforced with towers at three gates. Its architectural history thus encompasses an early fortification and later stages of development.

The Town Hall has probably stood in the middle of the market square since the first half of the 15th century; today, only the tower, without its spire, remains. Every day at 12 noon, the 15th-century Gothic Town Hall tower plays the Bierutów Hejnał, composed by a local musician. The Town Hall and tower thus link a prominent spot in the town plan with a recurring musical tradition.

Churches from Different Periods

The Gothic castle church, formerly a Protestant church, dedicated to Saint Catherine was built in the first half of the 13th century or earlier. It contains a Baroque high altar dating from 1661. The church and altar therefore belong to different periods: the altar was created long after the church may first have been built.

The parish church of St Joseph was built in the Neo-Gothic style from 1891 to 1893. The main walls of the former Protestant cemetery church of the Holy Trinity have been preserved. It is located in the town park, in front of the former Wrocław Gate; the park was created on the cemetery grounds after 1945. The different construction dates and the preserved state of the Holy Trinity church offer distinct historical points of reference.

Cycling Routes of Different Lengths

Two marked routes with different starting points are available for cycling tours. The red-marked PTTK cycling route “Trasa folwarków” starts in the castle courtyard in Bierutów, is about 20 kilometres long and takes 2.5 to 3 hours. The green-marked cycling route “Trasa Doliny Widawy” starts at the railway station, covers about 30 kilometres and has a stated cycling time of three hours.

The second route is about ten kilometres longer, while the stated times—2.5 to 3 hours and three hours—are quite similar. When planning, you can therefore weigh up the starting point, distance and time required together. Check the current route markings before relying on them for navigation.

Kayaking on the Widawa

Bierutów has a specially prepared spot for launching kayaks. The kayaking landing site on the banks of the Widawa is also suitable for camping. This provides another option for activities on the water in addition to the cycling routes.

A longer water route runs from Bierutów to a suburb of Wrocław. It is more than 40 kilometres long and can be completed in several hours. Navigability varies seasonally along the river; take this into account when planning. For tourist information and updates on the river’s condition and kayaking conditions, the Bierutów Town and Municipality Office and the Bierutów Municipal and Communal Cultural Centre are local points of contact.
