Głogowski: Architecture, Culture and the Oder Landscape
Accommodation in Głogowski
The town hall tower in Głogów is 80.35 metres tall and was reconstructed from 1994 to 1996 based on a design from 1720. Its observation platform is 47 metres above ground. It is open on Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m.; reservations are required. Plan your visit for the stated hours and book in advance.
Town Hall, Viewpoints and City History
The town hall itself also tells the story of several construction phases. It dates back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries; its present appearance took shape through renovations from 1832 to 1835 and from 1847 to 1850. Vaulted rooms from the transition between Gothic and Renaissance styles have been preserved in the west wing. Together with the tower’s later reconstruction, these dates illustrate different periods in the building’s history.
Culture in Głogów and Historic Sites
Zamek Książęcy was rebuilt from 1971 to 1983 and houses the Muzeum Archeologiczno-Historyczne. The castle tower serves as a viewpoint and can be accessed as part of a museum visit. In the exhibition “Architectural Details from the Old Town,” you can see sculptures and other stone objects from former buildings in Głogów.
The rebuilt Teatr im. Andreasa Gryphiusa took its present form through reconstructions carried out from 2017 to 2019. Today, it serves as the home of a branch of the Municipal Cultural Centre and as a venue for concerts, performances and conferences. For specific dates, it is advisable to check the current programme.
A literary connection leads to Grochowice: Edward Stachura lived and worked there in the winter of 1967. The lives of the villagers were portrayed in his work “Siekierezada.” In Czerna, in the municipality of Żukowice, there is also a palace in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Check its condition and access before visiting.
A well-preserved castle complex can be found in Brzeg Głogowski. The park probably dates from the mid-19th century; however, a park already existed on this site in the 18th century. Both details help date the present-day park while acknowledging the earlier grounds.
The Oder Valley and Outdoor Routes
The Oder Valley preserves visible river bends, oxbow lakes and sandbanks. It is crossed by a bird migration route and is home to numerous habitats for waterbirds. The areas around Borkowo, Golkowice and Mileszyn are considered particularly suitable for fishing and recreation. The riverbank between Borek and Leszkowice has been protected as a nature conservation area since 1986.
Several different routes are listed for cycling and walking. In the municipality of Pęcław, a cycle path runs along the left bank of the Oder from Chobienia to Głogów. An educational trail also follows the Białołęka–Droglowice–Leszkowice route. The “Jerzmanowa–Głogów–Jerzmanowa” cycle route is 32 kilometres long. The place names, route types and stated distance offer different points of reference for planning. Check the condition and signage of the routes before setting out on a cycling trip.
The castle park in Jerzmanowa is ideal for long walks. Its five-hectare collection of trees includes avenues and evergreen ivy; the park also features ponds stocked with fish by local residents. The municipality of Jerzmanowa also recommends fishing in commercially operated ponds in Bądzów, which contain various fish species. If you plan to fish there, check in advance whether the ponds are currently operating.
Planning Your Visit and Choosing a Hotel Location
The Głogów marina opened on 30 April 2016. Subsequently, the excursion boat “Laguna” returned to the Oder, and the harbour was also expanded to include kayaks and pedal boats. These details relate to developments at that time. If you are planning a boat trip or want to use watercraft, check availability in advance.
The Głogów Tourist Information Centre is located in the Old Town, in the Blocku Koszarowego building at Koszarowa 1. As location details can change, check the address before your visit.
When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: the town hall, castle, museum and cultural events in Głogów, or the Oder landscape, routes and parks in the locations listed above.
