Reichenbach: Arboretum, Mill and Owl Mountains
Accommodation in Reichenbach
Reichenbach combines botanical collections, industrial heritage and outdoor activities to create a versatile travel destination. The Wojsławice Arboretum is the botanical highlight, the Hilbert Mill brings an entire production process to life, while Dzierżoniów and Bielawa offer further routes and activities. This means different interests can shape your plans: plants, the history of technology and architecture, or getting active in the countryside.
Plant Collections in Wojsławice
The Wojsławice Arboretum covers more than 60 hectares and contains nearly 10,000 varieties of trees, shrubs and perennials. Seven National Plant Collections structure this offering; these are particularly extensive systematic collections that are exemplary in their labeling and managed by specialists. The area and number of varieties convey different measures: the size of the arboretum and the diversity of its plant groups. The arboretum is open to visitors from spring through autumn. Check the exact opening dates before making firm plans for your visit.
Mill Technology and Architectural History
The Hilbert Mill houses a complete, working technological production line for making flour, groats and bran. Visitors can follow the entire production process across all the floors of the mill. The focus is therefore not just on the finished product: each step in its production is part of the visitor experience. In November 2016, the Foundation for the Protection of Silesian Industrial Heritage took over the mill, converted it into a museum and opened it to visitors.
In Dzierżoniów, two tourist routes draw attention to different themes. The Dzierżoniowski Trakt Smoka leads to the city's most interesting buildings. The Dzierżoniowski Trakt Diory is both a tourist route and an educational trail that presents the heritage of the former “Diora” radio technology works. One route name thus focuses on buildings, while the other points to the industrial history of the former works. Gola Dzierżoniowska Castle also offers an architectural highlight: it is one of the oldest and largest Renaissance buildings in the area.
Viewpoints and Outdoor Activities
Wielka Sowa is a 1,015-meter-high peak with a historic observation tower. On Góra Parkowa, three walking paths and a nature and education trail lead to the observation tower. The Owl Mountains offer opportunities for hiking, cycling, alpine skiing and cross-country skiing.
Bielawa's city park has a climbing course over 200 meters long, with a variety of obstacles. These include a zip line, a suspension bridge, a swing, a net and a climbing wall. If you include this facility in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently operating.
Getting There
Dzierżoniów County can be reached by train and bus; the Sudeckie Centrum Komunikacyjne in Dzierżoniów connects rail, bus and car travel. Check current connections before setting off.
