Sucha Beskidzka combines historic architecture, city history and hiking. The Renaissance castle, old church and Karczma Rzym represent different aspects of architectural history; hiking trails lead across the surrounding hills and offer views of the town. If you are looking for a hotel, these interests can help structure your plans: first consider whether you want to spend more time exploring the sights in town or on longer hikes.

Renaissance Castle and City History

The Renaissance castle, also known as “Mały Wawel,” has three wings and four corner towers. Two-storey arcaded galleries run along the courtyard sides of the south and west wings. The complex originated as a fortified residence built of wood and stone, initially constructed between 1554 and 1580. Between 1608 and 1614, Piotr Komorowski expanded it into a representative Renaissance magnate residence. Its construction history can be understood chronologically: the original fortified residence was followed by its expansion into a representative residence. Since 2007, the Muzeum Miejskie Suchej Beskidzkiej has been based in the castle.

Churches, Chapel and Wooden Architecture

The old church combines a Gothic architectural form with Renaissance decorative elements. Fragments of the polychrome decoration have been preserved inside; a Baroque painting of the Assumption of Mary is located on the presbytery vault. Different periods are therefore reflected both in the architecture and in the surviving decorative details.

The Chapel of the Bar Confederates stands on Jasień Hill. The small stone building displays Renaissance features as well as Gothic and Neoclassical elements. The chapel was probably built in 1773 to commemorate the 1771 battles between the troops of the Bar Confederates and Russian troops under General Suvorov. Solemn Masses for the homeland are held there on patriotic holidays; no specific holiday calendar is associated with them.

In the center of Sucha Beskidzka, Karczma Rzym is an example of regional wooden architecture and a key site on the Wooden Architecture Route in Małopolska, designated in 2002. The castle, old church, chapel and Karczma thus showcase different historical and architectural themes without needing to be combined into a single route.

City Walking Route, Viewpoint and Hikes

The white-and-blue-marked urban historical and local heritage circular route passes through Sucha Beskidzka, linking historic sites and attractions. Its urban focus sets it apart from hikes across the surrounding hills. For views of the town, a blue hiking trail runs from Sucha Beskidzka via 632-metre-high Mioduszyna to a viewing platform on the mountainside. From the platform, the panorama stretches over Sucha Beskidzka and the area where the Stryszawka and Skawa rivers meet. It stands above the Garce settlement; the site includes a tourist shelter. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

Visitors can play with two portable chess sets in the castle and park complex: a traditional set and a three-player set. Stylish tables and folding chairs are provided. Ask locally about availability. This choice of activities means that Sucha Beskidzka combines historic architecture and hiking with an additional leisure option.
