Juszczyn lies in the Pasmo Policy mountain range and stretches picturesquely along the Skawa Valley. Wooded slopes, clearings and distinctive hamlets in the forests shape the character of the area. There are also traces of an earlier pastoral and slash-and-burn settlement, as well as chapels, roadside figures and memorials. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Juszczyn, the landscape and local history offer two different perspectives on the destination: nature around the valleys and evidence of life in the individual districts.

Landscape between the Skawa and Cadyńka

The wooded mountain slopes around the Cadyńka stream valley, the many idyllic clearings and the paths in Juszczyn invite you to relax and unwind throughout the year. Juszczyn Polany offers a closer look at the layout of the landscape: this district stretches along the Cadyńka at the foot of Mount Naroże. The Skawa and Cadyńka valleys, wooded slopes and open clearings thus represent distinct features of the local landscape.

A specific landmark for hikers is the yellow trail. At the upper edge of Juszczyn’s built-up area, it crosses a bend in an asphalt road near Osiedle Zgudowa. The mention of trails and clearings complements this marked point with a broader sense of the surroundings: outdoor recreation here is not limited to a single building or viewpoint.

Glassmaking history and traces of settlement

The history of the side valleys is also part of Juszczyn’s story. A glassworks operated in the 17th and 18th centuries at Jędrzejowa Rola in the upper district, in the Cadyńka side valley. It stood on the site of today’s Hucisko. Glass waste and fragments of bricks from the former furnaces can be found in the soil at Hucisko.

The distinctive hamlets scattered through the forests also reflect the area’s rural character and are considered clear traces of the earlier pastoral and slash-and-burn settlement. The settlement pattern and the history of glassmaking tell different chapters of local history: here, the scattered forest hamlets; there, the former use of the side valley for glass production. Together, these details help visitors understand Juszczyn not only as a landscape, but also as a place shaped by history.

Church and memorial sites

The Parish Church of Our Lady of Consolation stands in the lower part of Juszczyn. Its modern architecture dates from the 1970s. The main altar holds an image of the Virgin Mary, about 170 years old, from the so-called Żywiec School. Commemorative plaques on the bell tower wall recall the work of Solidarity chaplain Adolf Chojnacki. The church thus brings together architecture from the second half of the 20th century with religious and commemorative associations.

Not far from the church stands a stone column chapel containing an iron cast of the Crucifixion scene from the 19th century. Its materials and form set it apart from the church’s modern architecture, adding a smaller religious structure to the ensemble. To understand the local history, it is worth distinguishing these elements: the parish church’s architecture, the image of the Virgin Mary on the main altar and the plaques on the bell tower each have their own significance.

Chapels and figures in the districts

Religious monuments can also be found beyond the lower district. An old house chapel from the first half of the 19th century stands at the upper edge of the built-up area in Osiedle Zgudowa. Inside is a stone figure of Christ falling beneath the cross. On the way to Juszczyn Polany, there is also a brick-built chapel with a stone statue depicting the same scene; it dates from the first half of the 19th century.

More roadside figures are scattered around the settlements of Bory and Mirochowe. The figure in Osiedle Bory depicts Christ and dates from the first half of the 19th century. In Osiedle Mirochowe, a roadside figure depicts Christ crucified. It was erected by residents of the Mirochowa, Kachlowa and Majchrzakowa settlements. Pomnik Straconych, a memorial in Osiedle Bory, also commemorates the shooting of 13 people during the Second World War. These individual sites offer a local, close-up perspective on Juszczyn: chapels, figures and the memorial sit alongside the landscape and tell of different forms of religious remembrance and local history.
