Trails and historical context

Radziejów County can be explored from different perspectives: the Piast Trail runs through the county, while a separate walking trail connects Radziejów with Osięciny. There are also historic churches, protected landscapes and a regional Easter tradition. This allows you to give cultural themes, hiking and nature different priorities when planning your trip.

For geographical context, Radziejów County is located in Kujawy and also belongs to the geomorphological unit of the Greater Poland Lakeland. The two names refer to different aspects: Kujawy identifies the region, while the Greater Poland Lakeland indicates the geomorphological affiliation.

The Piast Trail runs through the county. Its name comes from Piast Kołodziej, who is considered the progenitor of the first Polish dynasty. This gives the route a historical connection and offers a point of interest for anyone interested in the Piast tradition.

The “Battle of Płowce” walking trail is a separate route. It connects Radziejów with Osięciny and runs through the area. The two routes can be distinguished by their stated focus: one is named after Piast Kołodziej, while the other is explicitly described as a walking trail with two named endpoints. As trail maintenance can change, it is advisable to check current conditions before setting out on a hike.

Churches with different historical dates

Radziejów has two churches, each with its own historical points of reference. The parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built at its present site in 1331, funded by Jan Grot, Bishop of Kraków. On 14 September 2014, the Franciscan church was elevated to a sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The dates mark different events: 1331 refers to the construction of the parish church, while 2014 marks the elevation of the Franciscan church to a sanctuary.

Protected areas and landscape

In Radziejów County, the Nadgoplański Park Tysiąclecia is both a nature reserve and a landscape park. A different protected-area relationship is central to Lake Świeskie: it lies within the “Jezioro Głuszyńskie” Landscape Protection Area. Also associated with the lake is a complex of meadow and marsh vegetation known as the Lake Świeskie channel complex. These specific landscape features provide a distinct focus for nature alongside the churches and routes.

Regional tradition and remembrance

Kujawiok, an Easter yeast cake, is one of the traditional regional foods of Radziejów County. Its classification as Easter baking adds a culinary dimension alongside the historical and landscape themes of the trip.

A reenactment of the Battle of Płowce takes place in the county every year. The historic battle was fought near Radziejów on 27 September 1331 during the Polish–Teutonic War. The two time frames should be distinguished: the reenactment takes place annually, while 27 September 1331 is the date of the battle. If you would like to include the reenactment in your travel plans, check the dates before you arrive.
